Best Time to Visit Anchorage: 22-Hour Midnight Sun Summers (May to Aug), Gold Sept Tundra & Aurora Winters
Timing your trip for June and July's 22-hour Midnight Sun, late August and September's golden autumn tundra + Northern Lights combo, or March's Iditarod.
Moderated by the maritime waters of Cook Inlet and shielded from Arctic blasts by the 6,190-metre wall of the Alaska Range to the north, Anchorage has a milder climate than many travellers expect: summer afternoons in June, July and August sit at a crisp, comfortable 17°C to 22°C (63°F to 72°F), while winter days average -3°C to -8°C (18°F to 26°F).
1. Peak Midnight Sun Summer (Mid-May to Mid-August: Endless Daylight, Salmon & Glaciers)
- Why June & July Feel Like Two Holidays in One: from late May through late July, the sun dips below the horizon just before midnight and rises again in the early hours, leaving a bright twilight where you can read outdoors without a torch. You can take a 6-hour glacier cruise during the day and still hike Flattop Mountain or cycle the Coastal Trail late in the evening after dinner.
- Mid-May to Early June: dry, sunny spring weather, newborn moose calves in Kincaid Park, King Salmon starting to run in Ship Creek, and lower shoulder-season hotel rates than July.
- Late June, July & Early August: warmest temperatures (19°C to 23°C), peak Katmai and Lake Clark bear viewing, Silver and Sockeye Salmon runs, and alpine wildflowers.
2. The Late-Summer Crossover Window: Late August & Early September (Trains + Autumn Gold + Aurora)
To experience both summer glacier cruises and trains and the Northern Lights on the same trip, visit between 20 August and 15 September: the Alaska Railroad and Kenai Fjords boats still run full summer schedules, the alpine tundra on Flattop and Hatcher Pass turns crimson red and birch-gold, bull moose carry their full antlers, and by late night the sky is dark enough to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
3. Winter Sunshine & Festivals: Late February & March (Iditarod, Fur Rondy, Ice Caves & Aurora)
Rather than dark December, visit in late February or March when 10 to 12 hours of sunny daylight combine with deep snow for Matanuska Glacier ice walks, the Fur Rondy festival, the Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod (first Saturday of March), and prime Northern Lights.
