Almaty

Kazakhstan, Asia

Beneath the snow-capped 4,000-metre wall of the Zailiyskiy Alatau range, Kazakhstan's former capital pairs leafy apple-orchard boulevards, timber Tsarist cathedrals, and Soviet modernist monuments with high-altitude alpine rinks, turquoise moraine lakes, and red desert canyons.

Quick decisions

  • How many days? Allow 4 to 5 full days: two days for the Golden Square, Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral, and the Green Bazaar, Kok-Tobe Hill, and the Medeu and Shymbulak gondola, plus two or three days for Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes.
  • Where should I stay? Base yourself in the walkable Golden Square around Panfilov Street and Tole Bi for parks, opera houses, and Metro Line 1, or along upper Dostyk Avenue near the Hotel Kazakhstan for quick access to the Kok-Tobe cable car and Bus 12 to Medeu.
  • Do I need a car? No for the city centre and Medeu, which are connected by the 11-station Metro Line 1, Onay buses, and Yandex Go apps; book a high-clearance 4WD tour or Soviet UAZ shuttle for Lake Kaindy and Altyn-Emel National Park.
  • Best for: High-altitude Tian Shan cable cars, earthquake-proof Tsarist timber cathedrals, Soviet modernist architecture, Saka Golden Man archaeology, and steppe canyon expeditions.
  • Before you go: Because the city slopes steadily southward toward the mountains, locals navigate using "up" (south toward Al-Farabi Avenue) and "down" (north toward Raimbek Avenue and the railway stations).
  • Getting around: Tap a contactless bank card or prepaid Onay card on city buses and the metro, take municipal Bus 12 from opposite the Hotel Kazakhstan to Medeu, and use electric shuttles inside Ile-Alatau National Park.
  • Continue your trip: Pair Almaty with Silk Road journeys across Asia via Beijing or Istanbul.

Overview

Set at an elevation of 700 to 900 metres along the northern piedmont of the Tian Shan mountains, Almaty is defined by the abrupt vertical rise of the Zailiyskiy Alatau range directly south of its tree-lined streets. Founded as the Imperial Russian fortification of Verny in 1854 near the medieval Silk Road settlement of Almatu, the city takes its Kazakh name from the ancestral wild Sievers apple forests (Malus sieversii) that still cloak its surrounding foothills. Even after the national capital moved north to Astana in 1997, Almaty remained the cultural, culinary, and intellectual heart of Kazakhstan, where headwaters from glacial valleys rush through open concrete aryk channels beside shaded pedestrian avenues, Tsarist timber churches in Panfilov Park, and monumental late-Soviet limestone facades. Within thirty minutes of leaving the spice stalls of the Green Bazaar or the marble mosaic halls of the Almaty Metro, an electric gondola lifts passengers from the Medeu high-mountain speed-skating rink up to the Talgar Pass at 3,200 metres, while highways east of the city open onto the rust-orange sedimentary towers of Charyn Canyon and the Singing Dune of Altyn-Emel and the submerged spruce trunks of Lake Kaindy and the Kolsai Lakes.

Getting there

Fly into Almaty International Airport (ALA) 15 km northeast of the Golden Square (served by municipal Bus 92 and Yandex Go rides), or arrive by KTZ Talgo train at central Almaty-2 Station or northern Almaty-1 Station.

Where to stay

Stay in the leafy Golden Square (Zolotoy Kvadrat) around Panfilov and Tulebayev streets, along upper Dostyk Avenue near the Hotel Kazakhstan and Kok-Tobe gondola, uphill along Al-Farabi Avenue, or at alpine chalets in Shymbulak (2,260m).

Things to do

Admire the 1907 timber Ascension (Zenkov) Cathedral in Panfilov Park and the Green Bazaar, ride the gondola from Medeu (1,691m) to Shymbulak and Talgar Pass (3,200m), steam in the domed Arasan Baths and see the Saka Golden Man, ride the Kok-Tobe cable car, and explore Big Almaty Lake, Kaindy, Kolsai, and Charyn Canyon.

Food and drink

Share platters of beshbarmak topped with horsemeat and kazy sausage, warm puffed baursak bread with fermented mare's milk (kumis), hand-pulled Uyghur guiru lagman noodles, steamed pumpkin manti, and fragrant crimson Almaty Aport apples.

Culture

Trace 2,500 years of steppe heritage from the fifth-century BCE Saka Golden Man of the Issyk kurgan and traditional two-stringed dombra lute recitals at the Yklas Museum to the 1970s Soviet modernist limestone landmarks and mosaic metro stations of the Golden Square.
