Where to Stay in Chicago: A Neighbourhood Guide
The Loop, River North, the West Loop or Lincoln Park: which base suits your trip.
Short answer: for a first visit, stay in the Loop or River North. You'll be able to walk to the river, Millennium Park and the Art Institute, and both are on several L lines. Choose the West Loop if food is the point of the trip, and Lincoln Park if you'd rather feel like a local.
Chicago hotel prices swing with the convention calendar more than the tourist season. A big trade show at McCormick Place can push rates up sharply across the city, so check dates before you book, and look out for extra hotel charges and taxes on the final bill.
The Loop
The business district, with the L tracks overhead, the Art Institute, Millennium Park and many of the historic buildings in our architecture guide. Handy and full of hotels, though quieter at night and at weekends than the areas north of the river.
River North
Just north of the river, with galleries, restaurants, nightlife and a huge choice of hotels. The most convenient all-round base, a short walk from the river cruise docks and the Magnificent Mile.
Streeterville and the Magnificent Mile
Between Michigan Avenue and the lake, with big hotels, department stores, Navy Pier and the lakefront path. Polished and busy, and particularly handy for families.
The Gold Coast
North of the Magnificent Mile, with old mansions, leafy streets, upmarket shops and Oak Street Beach. Quieter and more expensive.
The West Loop
Old warehouses turned into restaurants, bars and boutique hotels around Randolph Street and Fulton Market. The best choice for eating well, and on the Green and Pink lines.
Lincoln Park and Wicker Park
Residential neighbourhoods with fewer hotels and more short-term rentals. Lincoln Park has the free zoo, the park and the lake. Wicker Park, on the Blue Line towards O'Hare, has independent shops and a younger crowd.
Our getting there guide shows which airport train serves each area.
