Getting to Key West: Direct Flights to EYW Airport, Driving from Miami & the Ferry

Comparing flying directly into EYW Airport (10 minutes from Duval Street) versus driving the 113-mile Overseas Highway from Miami.

Even though Key West sits 200 kilometres (125 miles) off the southern mainland of Florida at the end of the Keys island chain, it is easy to reach, whether you want to skip driving and land 10 minutes from Duval Street, or make the coastal drive across 42 bridges from Miami.

1. Option A (Fastest & Car-Free): Fly Nonstop Into Key West International Airport (EYW)

If you are only visiting Key West itself, flying directly into Key West International Airport (EYW) saves you both a 7-hour round-trip drive from Miami and nightly hotel parking fees.

  • Direct Nonstop Flights from Over 20 Cities: American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Allegiant and Breeze operate daily nonstop flights into EYW from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York (JFK, LGA and EWR), Washington D.C., Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and Dallas.
  • 10 Minutes from the Runway to Your Hotel: EYW Airport sits on the southeastern edge of Key West island; a rideshare or pink Key West Taxi to any hotel in Old Town takes 8 to 12 minutes.

2. Option B: Flying Into Miami (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale (FLL) & Driving (or Coach)

  • By Rental Car Down the 113-Mile Overseas Highway (US-1): from Miami International Airport (MIA), it is 260 kilometres (160 miles, or 3.5 to 4 hours without stops); from Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL), add 40 minutes via the Florida Turnpike South. The Turnpike around Miami uses cashless electronic tolling (use SunPass, Visitor Toll Pass or your rental toll programme), whereas all 42 Keys bridges on the Overseas Highway are completely toll-free.
  • By Coach from Miami Airport (FlixBus & Greyhound): both operators run daily coaches from the Miami Airport Intermodal Station (MIA) down US-1 into Key West.

3. Option C (From Fort Myers & Marco Island): The Key West Express Ferry

Board the jet-powered Key West Express catamaran at Fort Myers Beach or Marco Island in the morning: it crosses the Gulf in 3.5 hours and docks inside Key West's Historic Seaport, steps from the free Duval Loop bus.
