Best Time to Visit Kuala Lumpur

Equatorial weather all year round, slightly drier summer and winter windows, and festive highlights.

Sitting just three degrees north of the Equator and sheltered between the Titiwangsa Mountains to the east and the island of Sumatra across the Strait of Malacca to the west, Kuala Lumpur has a true equatorial rainforest climate. Unlike northern cities such as Hanoi or Taipei, temperatures in Kuala Lumpur barely change from January to December: expect warm daytime highs of 31°C to 33°C and balmy nights around 23°C to 24°C every single week of the year.

Slightly Drier Windows (May to July, and late December to February) offer the highest number of bright hours for walking through KLCC Park, climbing the steps of Batu Caves and visiting the Perdana Botanical Garden. June and July are typically the sunniest months of the year, when the southwest monsoon is cushioned by Sumatra's mountain spine. Even in these drier months, short afternoon showers remain common, keeping the city's banyan trees and tropical parks vivid green.

Festival Season (January and February) is one of the most atmospheric times to be in the capital. During Chinese New Year, red lanterns and lion dances fill Chinatown's Petaling Street and the six tiers of Thean Hou Temple. Around the full moon of the Tamil month of Thai (late January or early February), over a million Hindu devotees and spectators gather at Batu Caves for Thaipusam, accompanying a silver chariot procession from Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Chinatown and carrying ornate kavadi up the 272 steps.

Inter-Monsoon Wettest Months (March to April, and October to November) bring the heaviest monthly rainfall totals (often 250 to 300 mm a month) as seasonal winds shift. Fortunately, Kuala Lumpur's rain almost never falls as all-day grey drizzle: mornings are usually bright and hot, followed by a theatrical, lightning-lit tropical thunderstorm in the mid-to-late afternoon that clears the air within ninety minutes. Plan outdoor sights like Batu Caves and Merdeka Square before lunch, spend rainy late afternoons inside the Islamic Arts Museum or walking the covered skybridge to Bukit Bintang, and head back outside after dusk. During the holy month of Ramadan, late-afternoon food bazaars (Bazar Ramadan) pop up in Kampung Baru and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Check what to wear in Kuala Lumpur before packing.
