Hiking Indian Canyons (Andreas, Palm & Murray Canyons) & 60-Foot Tahquitz Canyon Waterfall
Walking beneath thousands of native California fan palms along rushing snowmelt creeks at Indian Canyons and Tahquitz Waterfall.
Ten minutes south of Downtown Palm Springs at the end of South Palm Canyon Drive, underground fault lines trap melting snow from 3,302-metre Mount San Jacinto and force cool water to the surface, nurturing the largest natural groves of native California Fan Palms (Washingtonia filifera, the only palm native to the Western US). Protected by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians (see the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum), the tribal reserve comprises two canyon complexes 3 miles apart; each charges an entry fee, or you can buy a combo pass (check rates and opening days on the tribal website).
1. Site A: 'Indian Canyons' (38520 S Palm Canyon Dr)
One entrance gate unlocks three fan-palm canyon oases inside the main reserve. With two hours, you can hike the top two trails back to back:
- 'Andreas Canyon Trail' (1.6 km / 1.0-Mile Loop | 45 to 60 Minutes): one of the most photogenic walks in Southern California. The path follows a year-round stream beneath over 150 skirted California fan palms and cottonwoods, passing red-rock cliffs and 500-year-old Cahuilla bedrock mortars (pahat) where Indigenous women ground mesquite beans and acorns.
- 'Palm Canyon Trail' (At the Trading Post, 3.2 km / 2 Miles Round-Trip | 1 Hour): park at the hilltop Trading Post and walk down stone switchbacks into 15-mile-long Palm Canyon, the largest natural fan-palm oasis in the world. Picnic on benches beside the stream before climbing back.
- 'Murray Canyon Trail to Seven Sisters Waterfall' (6.0 km / 3.7 Miles Round-Trip | 2 Hours): a quieter trail where endangered Peninsular Bighorn Sheep come down to drink.
2. Site B (Closer to Downtown): 'Tahquitz Canyon Waterfall Trail' (500 W Mesquite Ave)
At the western end of Mesquite Avenue 5 minutes from Downtown, sacred Tahquitz Canyon is a steeper 2.9-kilometre (1.8-mile) loop climb up 105 vertical metres (350 granite rock steps) beside a creek to 18-metre (60-foot) Tahquitz Falls, plunging into a granite pool. Rangers enforce strict entry rules: every hiker must carry water, wear closed-toe shoes, and enter before the mid-afternoon cut-off.
