Best Time to Visit Port Louis

How the Moka Range shelters Port Louis in the June-to-September winter, plus sunny spring and festival months.

Understanding Port Louis's microclimate gives you a secret advantage on Mauritius. Because the semi-circular wall of the Moka Range rises directly behind the city, Port Louis sits in a natural leeward shelter from the south-east trade winds that blow across the island during the Southern Hemisphere winter. Even when the east coast or central highland plateau around Curepipe feels cool and cloudy, the capital is almost always two to four degrees warmer and noticeably sunnier.

Cool, Dry Winter and Spring (May to November) is the most comfortable season for walking the cobbled quays of Aapravasi Ghat and climbing Fort Adelaide. Between June and September, daytime highs in Port Louis hover around a pleasant 25°C to 27°C with low humidity and very little rain, making it ideal for street-food grazing in Central Market and Chinatown and hiking the ridge of Le Pouce or Signal Mountain without afternoon heat haze. October and November bring long, dry, sun-drenched days (28°C to 29°C) when purple jacarandas and scarlet flamboyant (Delonix regia) trees burst into bloom across the Champ de Mars, Jardin de la Compagnie and Place d'Armes.

Warm, Humid Summer (December to April) brings tropical heat (30°C to 31°C in the harbour bowl), sweet ripe lychees and Victoria mangoes in the market stalls, and afternoon showers, heaviest between January and March when occasional Indian Ocean cyclones can pass near the Mascarene Islands. If you visit in summer, tour the central markets and outdoor heritage sites early in the morning before midday warmth builds, spend the hottest afternoon hours inside the air-conditioned Blue Penny Museum or swimming on the north-west coast at Balaclava, and experience the city's lively Chinese Spring Festival dragon dances in Chinatown, Divali lanterns in autumn, or the colourful Tamil Thaipusam Cavadee processions in January or February.
