Where to Stay in Taipei: Best Districts Compared

Comparing central Zhongshan, lively Ximending, transit-ready Taipei Main Station, Da'an and Xinyi.

Because the Taipei Metro (MRT) is so fast and reliable, any hotel within a five-minute walk of a central Red, Blue or Green Line station puts the entire city within twenty minutes. Your choice comes down to whether you prefer historic west-side street energy, leafy coffee-and-design lanes, or modern skyscrapers.

Zhongshan & Chifeng Street (best balanced all-round base)

Just one MRT stop north of Taipei Main Station along the Red and Green lines, Zhongshan blends tree-shaded boulevards (Zhongshan North Road) with a grid of pedestrianised back lanes around Chifeng Street and Linear Park. Former automotive-parts workshops now house Taipei's highest concentration of independent coffee roasters, vintage boutiques, Taiwanese lifestyle shops and bistros. You are ten minutes on foot from Ningxia Night Market, five minutes from the Airport MRT at Taipei Main Station, and right on the Red Line for Shilin, Beitou and Taipei 101, with polished Japanese-managed mid-range and five-star hotels.

Ximending & Taipei Main Station / Beimen (best for transit and first-timers)

On the western side of downtown, Taipei Main Station and neighbouring Beimen give you direct step-free access to the Taoyuan Airport MRT, high-speed bullet trains south, and Bus 965 to Jiufen, while putting historic Dihua Street in Dadaocheng within a ten-minute walk. Immediately south at Ximen MRT interchange (Blue and Green lines), Ximending is Taipei's neon-lit pedestrian youth and shopping district around the 1908 octagonal brick Red House, packed with budget-friendly boutique hotels, late-night street snacks and cinema arcades.

Da'an & Dongmen / Yongkang Street (best for food lovers and parks)

Centred around Dongmen, Daan Park and Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT stations, the residential heart of Da'an is where many local Taipei residents would choose to live. Staying near Dongmen puts soup-dumpling houses, beef-noodle shops and traditional tea rooms on Yongkang Street right outside your door, with sprawling Da'an Forest Park and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall a short walk away.

Xinyi District (best for luxury hotels, Taipei 101 and rooftop bars)

At the eastern end of the central basin around Taipei 101, Xinyi is Taipei's sleek financial and luxury shopping district, linked by elevated covered walkways between department stores, rooftop cocktail lounges and flagship international five-star hotels, just one MRT stop from the Xiangshan sunset trailhead. Fit your chosen area into our three-day Taipei itinerary.
