Beyond the classic Crater Lake trail at the Maroon Bells, these four hikes in Aspen range from an easy 45-minute golden-hour walk right from town to two high-alpine glacial lakes.

1. Walking Distance from Downtown Aspen (No Car Needed): Smuggler Mountain & Hunter Creek

  1. Smuggler Mountain Road to the Observation Deck (4.8 km / 3.0 Miles Round-Trip | 240m / 790 ft Gain | 1 to 1.5 Hours): starting on the northeastern edge of downtown (at Park Avenue and Birch Street past the historic 1879 Smuggler Mine), this wide dirt road climbs steadily to a wooden Observation Deck looking straight across the valley at Aspen Mountain ('Ajax'), Independence Pass and the rooftops of Downtown Aspen.
    • 2-for-1 Loop via Hunter Creek Valley: instead of walking back down the road, turn right behind the viewing deck onto the Hunter Creek Cutoff Trail, which drops into a shaded canyon of aspens and wooden footbridges beside cascading Hunter Creek back into Downtown Aspen.
  2. Flat River Walks: for a gentle riverside stroll through pines and aspens, follow the Difficult Creek Trail (4 miles east on Hwy 82) or the upper Rio Grande Trail.

2. High-Alpine Lake Hikes Up Castle Creek Road (Do on Day 2 or 3 After Acclimatising)

Drive 20 minutes up Castle Creek Road, arriving in the early morning for free roadside parking and to finish before afternoon thunderclouds build:

  • American Lake Trail (10.3 km / 6.4 Miles Round-Trip | 620m / 2,030 ft Gain | 3.5 to 4 Hours): climbs through thick white-barked quaking aspen forests (striking in late September) to an emerald glacial tarn at 3,460 metres (11,350 feet).
  • Cathedral Lake Trail (9.0 km / 5.6 Miles Round-Trip | 625m / 2,050 ft Gain | 3.5 to 4.5 Hours): climbs along Pine Creek and up steep switchbacks ('The Wall') to 3,617 metres (11,866 feet) beside deep-turquoise Cathedral Lake beneath 4,000-metre granite spires, where marmots and pikas whistle from the rocks.
