Dodoma 3-Day Itinerary: Lion Rock, Vineyards and Kondoa

Three days combining Dodoma's granite viewpoints, tropical-latitude vineyards and UNESCO rock paintings.

Three days in Dodoma give you time to experience East Africa's high-speed electric railway, climb the city's signature granite inselberg, taste Tanzanian wines where the vines grow, and travel north into the Rift Valley escarpment to see prehistoric rock shelters. Read our practical briefing before setting off.

Day 1: SGR Arrival, Nyerere Square, Gaddafi Mosque & Lion Rock Sunset

  • Morning: arrive at Samia Suluhu Hassan SGR Station on the morning electric express from Dar es Salaam, drop your bags in Central Dodoma or Kilimani, and take a stroll around tree-shaded Nyerere Square and the historic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.
  • Midday: browse the spice, honey and woven-basket stalls of Sabasaba Market, then inspect meteorite and gemstone displays at the Geological Survey of Tanzania Museum.
  • Afternoon: visit the rose-pink Gaddafi Mosque (dressing modestly with covered shoulders and knees) to admire its twin minarets and calm prayer courtyard.
  • Late afternoon: ride a bajaji to the foot of Lion Rock (Simba Hill) and scramble 35 minutes up the granite boulders to watch the sun sink across the baobab-dotted plateau.
  • Evening: dine in Area C on charcoal-grilled goat (mbuzi choma) and green plantains.

Day 2: Dodoma Wine Valley, Bihawana Mission & Lake Hombolo

  • Morning: set out with a pre-booked driver to the historic Bihawana Mission south-west of town, where Italian missionaries planted Tanzania's first vines in 1938, and walk through smallholder plots of indigenous Makutupora and Chenin Blanc grapes.
  • Midday: tour the fermentation cellars and tasting room at Cetawico or Alko Vintages to compare crisp dry whites, barrel-aged Syrah and sweet fortified Dompo.
  • Afternoon: drive north-east through baobab bushland to the vineyards around Lake Hombolo beneath the Chenene Hills, pausing by the water to watch kingfishers, fish eagles and hippos before returning to Dodoma for a free-range chicken (kuku wa kienyeji) dinner.

Day 3: UNESCO Kondoa Rock-Art Shelters on the Maasai Escarpment

  • Morning: depart early up the paved Great North Road (A104) to the Kolo Rock Art Museum (roughly two and a half hours north). Pick up an official antiquities guide and climb the granite paths to the Mongomi wa Kolo rock shelters to study ancient red-ochre hunter-gatherer paintings of giraffes, eland and ritual figures.
  • Afternoon: enjoy a packed picnic or roadside lunch in Kondoa town, visit a second shelter cluster along the escarpment ridge, and return to Dodoma in time for the evening SGR express or a final night in Kilimani.
