Where to Stay in Dodoma: Best Areas Compared

Comparing walkable central streets around Nyerere Square with quiet hillside compounds in Kilimani and Kisasa.

Because Dodoma was planned as a low-density garden capital rather than a high-rise metropolis, accommodation spreads across several distinct residential zones ("Areas") radiating east and south from the historic railway core. Choosing the right neighbourhood depends on whether you prefer walking out to central cafés and markets or sleeping in a quiet walled garden near the ministerial avenues.

Central Dodoma and Nyerere Square (best for walkability and short stays)

Staying within a ten-minute walk of Nyerere Square, Independence Avenue and the Gaddafi Mosque puts you in the liveliest part of the city. You can stroll on foot to coffee stalls, bakeries, banks, Sabasaba Market and the Geological Museum, and you are only ten minutes by taxi from Dodoma Airport or fifteen minutes from the Samia Suluhu Hassan SGR Station. Hotels here range from refurbished mid-range business towers to dependable town guesthouses popular with visiting civil servants.

Kilimani, Area C and Area D (leafy hillside calm and dining compounds)

Rising gently on the slopes south-east and north-east of the centre near the Bunge (Parliament) and old ministerial residences, Kilimani, Area C and Area D are Dodoma's most sought-after upscale neighbourhoods. Wide boulevards shaded by flame trees and bougainvillea hold boutique hotels, diplomatic guesthouses and several of the city's best evening nyama choma and wine lounges. Area C and Area D give you a breezy, secure evening atmosphere while keeping the centre a five-minute bajaji ride away.

Kisasa and the Morogoro Highway Corridor (modern space and pool hotels)

Stretching east of Parliament along the dual carriageway toward Mtumba (Government City) and Morogoro, Kisasa is where many of Dodoma's newest full-service hotels and conference resorts have been built. If you are arriving by road from Dar es Salaam, travelling with a private vehicle for Hombolo vineyard excursions, or looking for larger rooms with swimming pools and secure parking, Kisasa offers the most modern facilities.

Mlimwa and North Dodoma (close to Lion Rock and the Kondoa highway)

On the northern edge of town at the foot of Simba Hill, quiet residential compounds in Mlimwa place you minutes from the Lion Rock trailhead and provide an immediate morning getaway up the A104 highway for a three-day itinerary that includes Kondoa.
