Where to Stay in Hong Kong: Kowloon vs Hong Kong Island

Choosing between Kowloon's harbour-facing Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok vs Hong Kong Island's Central, Sheung Wan and Wan Chai.

Choosing where to stay in Hong Kong starts with one simple question: do you want to stay on the Kowloon side looking across the water at the famous Hong Kong Island skyline, or on Hong Kong Island itself among the historic tram line and hillside cafes? Because the Star Ferry and MTR cross beneath the harbour in minutes, both sides are equally convenient.

Tsim Sha Tsui & West Kowloon (Best for First-Timers & Skyline Views)

At the southern tip of the Kowloon Peninsula, Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) offers the postcard panorama looking south across Victoria Harbour toward Central and Victoria Peak. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the Star Ferry pier, the Avenue of Stars, Kowloon Park and the museums of West Kowloon, with direct MTR Tsuen Wan Line and Airport Express / high-speed rail access nearby.

Central, Soho & Sheung Wan (Best for Cafes, Galleries & Character)

On the northwestern shore of Hong Kong Island, Central and Soho climb the hillside around the Mid-Levels Escalator, Tai Kwun and Hollywood Road, packing the territory's highest concentration of independent restaurants, cocktail bars and contemporary galleries. Just ten minutes' walk west, Sheung Wan is slightly calmer and better value, blending boutique hotels and specialty coffee shops with dried-seafood streets, Man Mo Temple and the Macau ferry terminal.

Wan Chai & Causeway Bay (Best for Trams, Dining & Shopping)

East of Admiralty along the Ding Ding tramway, Wan Chai combines historic heritage pockets like the Blue House cluster, Lee Tung Avenue and roast-goose institutions with major convention hotels on the harbourfront. Neighbouring Causeway Bay is a tireless 24-hour shopping and dining hub bordering leafy Victoria Park, ideal for late-night noodle and dessert lovers.

Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei & Jordan (Best for Street Markets & Value)

Further north up Kowloon's Nathan Road corridor, hotels around Jordan, Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok deliver noticeably larger rooms or lower nightly rates than Central, placing you right outside the Temple Street and Ladies' markets with direct Airport Bus A21 service to the door.
