Where to Stay in Kraków: A Neighbourhood Guide
The Old Town, Kazimierz or Podgórze: which base fits your trip.
Short answer: stay in the Old Town for a first visit, ideally on a side street a block or two from the Market Square. Everything is walkable, and the station is close for Auschwitz and Wieliczka. Choose Kazimierz if food and nightlife matter more than being in the centre.
Kraków is compact, so the difference between areas is atmosphere and noise more than distance. The main thing to check before booking is whether your room faces a busy street or a courtyard; weekend nights around the Market Square can be loud.
Old Town
Hotels in historic townhouses, from grand to simple, with the square, Wawel and the churches on your doorstep. The streets nearest the Market Square are the liveliest at night; Kanonicza and the streets towards Wawel are quieter. Our Old Town guide follows this route.
Kazimierz
The old Jewish quarter, a ten-minute walk south of Wawel. Boutique hotels and apartments above cafés, the city's best food and bars, and more character than the Old Town. The streets around Plac Nowy stay loud late.
Podgórze
Across the Vistula by footbridge from Kazimierz. Quieter, cheaper and more residential, near Schindler's Factory and the riverside. A good choice for a longer stay, with trams into the centre.
Kleparz and Stare Miasto north
Just north of the Planty, near the station. Practical and slightly cheaper, with the Stary Kleparz market for fruit and local produce. Handy for early buses and trains.
Near Kraków Główny
Chain hotels by the station and the Galeria Krakowska mall. Convenient rather than charming, but useful if you're arriving late or leaving early, and for the Auschwitz bus.
Book well ahead for summer weekends and the Christmas market season, when central hotels fill first.
