What to Wear in Miami
Beachwear, light city clothes and one outfit for a night out.
Miami dresses up more than most beach cities. By day it's shorts, sundresses and sandals. In the evening, especially in South Beach, Brickell and the Design District, people make an effort, and the smarter clubs and restaurants notice.
For the beach
Swimwear, a cover-up and flip-flops. Cover up when you leave the sand: walking into a café or shop in just swimwear is frowned on, and some places won't serve you. Bring a hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen, and a rash guard if you burn easily.
For the city
Light, breathable clothes in linen or cotton, all year. Even in winter, days are usually warm. Pack a light layer: air conditioning is fierce in malls, museums and restaurants, and the dry-season evenings can turn cool, especially by the water.
For the rain
From May to October, heavy showers arrive most afternoons and pass within an hour. A compact umbrella or a light rain jacket helps, along with sandals or shoes that can get wet.
For the evening
Smart casual works for most restaurants. For the big clubs and hotel bars, men should wear long trousers, closed shoes and a collared shirt, and women can dress up as much as they like. Sportswear, baseball caps and flip-flops can get you turned away at the door.
For day trips
In the Everglades, wear light long sleeves and trousers against the sun and mosquitoes, and bring insect repellent, especially in the wet season. For boat trips or snorkelling in Biscayne or the Keys, bring water shoes.
