Best Time to Visit Ottawa: May Tulip Festival, July 1 Canada Day, Fall Rhapsody & Winterlude
Timing your trip around Ottawa's four signature seasons: May's 1 million tulips, sunny July bike paths, October's Gatineau foliage or February's frozen canal.
Because Ottawa is the national stage of Canada, its calendar is built around four distinct seasonal spectacles, each transforming the city's parks, waterways and museums completely.
1. Mid-May: The Canadian Tulip Festival (Best Spring Window)
If you visit during the 11 days leading up to the third Monday of May (Victoria Day), you catch the Canadian Tulip Festival at peak bloom. Over one million tulips line Commissioners Park at Dow's Lake, Major's Hill Park and Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal Locks open for the boating season on Victoria Day weekend, and daytime highs sit at a crisp, sunny 18°C to 22°C.
2. Summer: Cycling, Festivals & 1 July 'Canada Day' (June, July & August)
Summer in Ottawa is warm, green and festival-packed (with afternoon highs of 25°C to 28°C / 77°F to 82°F):
- 1 July, Canada Day in the Capital: the biggest single-day celebration in the country. Hundreds of thousands of red-and-white-clad Canadians gather at LeBreton Flats, Parliament Hill and across downtown for Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds flyovers, free afternoon and evening concerts, and giant late-evening fireworks over the Ottawa River.
- July & August Festivals: Ottawa Bluesfest (a massive 10-day outdoor music festival at LeBreton Flats in July), the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, and every weekend the NCC Weekend Bikedays close over 50 kilometres of scenic river and canal parkways to cars exclusively for cyclists and walkers.
3. Autumn: 'Fall Rhapsody' in Gatineau Park (Late September to Late October)
From late September through late October, the sugar maples along the Rideau Canal and across the hills of Gatineau Park ignite in crimson and gold during Fall Rhapsody (Coloris automnal), with free NCC shuttle buses running from downtown Ottawa from Thursday to Sunday.
4. Winter: Skating the Rideau Canal & Winterlude (Late January to Late February)
Wait until late January or the first three weeks of February (during Winterlude) when the deep freeze (-8°C to -18°C) opens the 7.8-kilometre Rideau Canal Skateway. (Avoid March, April and November, which are chilly, slushy transition months when the canal is neither open for skating nor filled with water for boats). Check what to wear in Ottawa.
