Ottawa in Winter: Skating the 7.8km Rideau Canal Skateway & Winterlude Festival

Lacing up skates on the 7.8-kilometre Rideau Canal Skateway, the world's largest naturally frozen ice rink, with a hot BeaverTail on the ice.

Every winter when sustained January sub-zero temperatures freeze the ice of the Rideau Canal to a thickness of at least 30 centimetres (12 inches) of clear, high-quality ice, the National Capital Commission sweeps and floods the canal through the heart of the city to open the Rideau Canal Skateway, certified by Guinness World Records as the largest naturally frozen ice-skating rink in the world.

1. How to Skate the 7.8-Kilometre Rideau Canal Skateway (Free & Open Around the Clock)

Stretching for 7.8 kilometres (4.8 miles) from steps below Parliament Hill and the National Arts Centre south through the Glebe and Lansdowne Park to Dow's Lake and Carleton University (Hartwells Locks), the Skateway has a surface area equivalent to 90 Olympic hockey rinks:

  • When Is the Skateway Open (Typically Mid or Late January to Late February): because the Skateway relies entirely on natural winter cold (-10°C to -20°C nights for 10 to 14 consecutive days), its exact opening dates vary each year; always check the live ice-condition flag status (Green, Yellow or Red) at ncc-ccn.gc.ca.
  • Free Admission & Where to Rent Skates Right on the Ice: skating on the canal is completely free at any hour. Over 30 staircases and wheelchair-accessible ramps lead down onto the ice, with heated changing chalets, washrooms and fire pits along the route. Rent figure or hockey skates (plus red plastic sleighs to push non-skating children) directly at the Fifth Avenue Rest Area (in the Glebe) or downtown near the National Arts Centre and Mackenzie King Bridge, and stop at the on-ice BeaverTails huts for a hot cinnamon pastry and warm apple cider without taking your skates off.

2. The 'Winterlude' Festival (First Three Weekends of February, Free Entry)

For the first three weeks of every February, Ottawa and Gatineau celebrate Winterlude (Bal de Neige), welcoming 600,000 visitors to main free festival zones connected by a free Sno-Bus shuttle:

  1. Confederation Park & Sparks Street ('Crystal Garden' Ice-Carving Competition): master ice sculptors from around the world use chainsaws and chisels to carve giant blocks of crystal ice into glowing monuments illuminated after dark.
  2. Jacques-Cartier Park in Gatineau ('Snowflake Kingdom' / Domaine des flocons): the largest snow playground in North America, featuring giant sculpted snow slides for inner-tubing alongside Ottawa's furry Ice Hog mascots (Noumi and Nouma).
