Calm turquoise Andaman seas from December to March, shoulder-season value, and southwest monsoon surf.
Unlike the Gulf of Thailand islands (such as Koh Samui), Phuket faces the open Andaman Sea and follows the classic Indian Ocean monsoon calendar. Because sea conditions directly affect swimming on the west coast and boat visibility around the outer islands, choosing the right season makes a noticeable difference.
Cool and Dry Northeast Monsoon (December to March) is the prime beach and island season in Phuket. Prevailing winds blow offshore from the north-east, flattening the waves along the west-coast bays of Kata, Karon, Nai Harn, Surin and Bang Tao into calm, clear turquoise water ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. Skies are bright, humidity is lower, daytime highs sit around 31°C to 32°C, and underwater visibility for snorkelling and diving around the Phi Phi and Racha Islands reaches its annual peak. Because late December and January mark the height of the European winter escape, book beachfront hotels and small-group boat tours well in advance.
Warm Shoulder Months (November and April) offer an appealing balance. In November, the final monsoon showers taper off leaving lush green headlands and calmer seas, coinciding with the candlelit Loy Krathong festival. April is the hottest month of the year (33°C to 34°C) with glassy, bath-warm seas before the wind shifts, highlighted on 13 to 15 April by nationwide Songkran (Thai New Year) water celebrations.
Southwest Monsoon / Green Season (May to October) brings warm onshore winds off the Indian Ocean, lower hotel rates in luxury beach resorts and intermittent heavy tropical downpours (peaking in September and October). While open west-coast beaches often fly red surf flags due to strong rip currents (making this Phuket's surfing season at Kata Beach), sheltered Phang Nga Bay on the east side of the island remains protected by the mainland peninsula and can be cruised year-round, and Phuket Old Town is a pleasure in any weather. During the ninth lunar month (usually late September or October), Old Town Chinese shrines host the extraordinary nine-day Phuket Vegetarian Festival (Tesagan Gin Je).
