Best Time to Visit Quebec City: Summer Terraces, October Fall Foliage & Atmospheric Winter Snow
Choosing between Quebec City's three peak seasons: sunny summer café terraces, blazing October autumn maples or atmospheric winter snow.
Unlike mountain parks that only shine in summer, Quebec City is one of the rare destinations in North America that has three completely distinct, acclaimed peak seasons: warm festival-packed summers, blazing red-and-gold autumn maple foliage, and a atmospheric European-style winter wonderland.
1. Summer: Outdoor Café Terraces & Major Festivals (June, July & August)
Summer in Quebec City is sunny, green and comfortably warm, with afternoon highs around 23°C to 26°C (73°F to 79°F) without the oppressive humidity of New York or Washington. Every street corner bursts with hanging flower baskets, streets like Rue Saint-Jean close to cars for outdoor dining, and three huge festivals take over the city:
- 23 to 24 June, Fête Nationale du Québec (Saint-Jean-Baptiste): a giant free open-air concert on the Plains of Abraham celebrating Québécois music and culture.
- Early July (11 Days), Festival d'été de Québec (FEQ): one of North America's largest music festivals, bringing over 300 concerts right onto the Plains of Abraham.
- Early August, Les Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France: when Old Quebec steps back into the 17th and 18th centuries with costumed parades, markets and historical re-enactments.
2. Autumn: Peak Maple Foliage & Harvest (Mid-September to Mid-October)
From 20 September to 20 October, crisp 14°C to 18°C days and cool nights ignite millions of sugar maples and yellow birches across the Plains of Abraham, Île d'Orléans (where it is apple-picking and ice-cider harvest time) and Jacques-Cartier National Park.
3. Winter Wonderland: Christmas Markets, Tobogganing & Carnaval (Late Nov to March)
If you dress warmly (-5°C to -15°C), visiting during the December German Christmas Market or February's Carnaval de Québec & Hôtel de Glace (Ice Hotel) is memorable. (Note: April, early May and early November are the quietest, lowest-priced shoulder months when snow is melting or leaves have fallen).
