Best Time to Visit Valparaíso: Coastal Climate, Summer Sun & New Year Fireworks
Month-by-month weather guide to Valparaíso using official 1991-2020 DMC climate normals: compare the sunny October-April season, Casablanca harvest, and winter.
Cooled year-round by the cold upwelling waters of the Humboldt Current sweeping north along the Chilean Pacific coast, Valparaíso and Viña del Mar enjoy a mild, maritime warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csb) that spares the coast from both the 33°C summer heatwaves and the frosty winter mornings of inland Santiago. According to official 1991 to 2020 Dirección Meteorológica de Chile (DMC) normals at Punta Ángeles, average afternoon highs range from a pleasant 21.6°C in January and 21.5°C in February to 14.9°C in July, while overnight lows never average below 8.2°C.

October to April: Spring, Summer & Wine Harvest (Best Overall)
For seven consecutive months from October through April, coastal skies are predominantly dry and sunny (averaging 0 rain days per month from December through February and just 1 to 2 rain days in spring and autumn):
- Peak Summer & Beach Season (December to February, 20.8°C to 21.6°C): Long daylight hours and sea breezes make summer ideal for combining morning walks on Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción with afternoons on the beaches of Viña del Mar, Reñaca, and Concón. On 31 December, Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, and Concón stage Año Nuevo en el Mar, the largest New Year's Eve bay celebration on the Pacific coast, while late February brings the famous six-night Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar at the Quinta Vergara amphitheatre.
- Spring & the Autumn Wine Harvest (October to November & March to April, 17.8°C to 20.4°C): Many experienced travellers prefer November, March, and April, when summer crowds thin out, afternoon light is golden across the hills, and the vineyards of the Casablanca Valley celebrate the March and April grape harvest (Vendimia). In November, Valparaíso also hosts the prestigious Puerto de Ideas cultural festival.

May to September: Mild Coastal Winter & Layering for the Camanchaca
Between May and August, frontal systems bring brief winter showers (5 to 7 rain days per month) alternating with crisp, crystal-clear days when snow-capped Andean peaks are visible from the upper hills. Whatever month you visit, pack a light windproof jacket or alpaca sweater: morning marine fog (vaguada costera or camanchaca) frequently blankets the bay until mid-morning before burning off into brilliant sunshine.
