Best Time to Visit Almaty: May Apple Blossoms, September Autumn Gold & Shymbulak Snow
Find the best time to visit Almaty using official Kazhydromet climate data, comparing May wild apple blossoms, September golden autumn, and winter skiing at Shymbulak.
Almaty experiences a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfa) shaped by the direct proximity of the 4,000-metre Zailiyskiy Alatau barrier and the open Eurasian steppe to the north. Because altitude rises by more than 2,300 metres between the city boulevards and the Shymbulak ski slopes, two completely different seasons often coexist on the same afternoon.

May to June: wild apple blossoms and green foothills
Late spring brings the highest annual rainfall (around 106 to 107 millimetres per month in April and May according to Kazhydromet normals), feeding wild tulips on the steppe and flowering Malus sieversii apple orchards across the foothills. Daytime highs in the city reach 22 to 28 degrees Celsius, making May the prime window for desert excursions to Charyn Canyon and Altyn-Emel National Park before mid-summer desert temperatures climb above 35 degrees.
July to August: high-altitude trekking window
July is the warmest and driest summer month in the city, with average highs of 30.0 degrees Celsius and cool mountain breezes descending along the river corridors after dusk. While the steppe canyons become hot at midday, high passes above 3,000 metres in Ile-Alatau National Park and the Kolsai Lakes shed their winter snowpack, opening alpine trails to Bogdanovich Glacier, Furmanov Peak, and Mynzhylki plateau.

September to mid-October: golden autumn (Barhatny Sezon)
Ask any local for their favourite month and most will name September. Rainfall drops to around 29 millimetres, skies turn crisp cobalt blue, and daytime temperatures settle around 23.8 degrees Celsius in September before cooling to 15.8 degrees in October. Across the city avenues and mountain gorges, birch, oak, and aspen groves turn amber beneath early dustings of fresh snow on the peaks, while the Green Bazaar fills with newly harvested Aport apples, melons, and pomegranates.
Late November to March: speed skating and Shymbulak powder
Winter brings average January highs of minus 0.7 degrees and overnight lows of minus 8.4 degrees in the city, sometimes accompanied by temperature inversions that trap haze over the lower northern districts. Rising above the inversion layer on the gondola to Shymbulak (2,260 to 3,200 metres) reveals bright winter sunshine, reliable alpine snowpack, and open-air ice skating at Medeu.
