What to Wear in Almaty: 3,200-Metre Mountain Layers, Steppe Footwear & Cathedral Dress

Pack smart for Almaty with our clothing guide covering 20-degree temperature drops between the city and Talgar Pass, cathedral etiquette, and Arasan bathhouse kit.

Packing for Almaty requires dressing for a 15-to-20-degree Celsius temperature swing within a single cable car ride. A sunny afternoon that feels like summer along the cafe terraces of Panfilov Street can turn into a freezing, wind-swept alpine environment fifty minutes later at the 3,200-metre Talgar Pass.

Layering for Medeu, Shymbulak, and Big Almaty Lake

Even in July and August, snowfields remain beside the upper gondola station at Shymbulak, and sudden convective showers roll off the glaciers of Ile-Alatau National Park. Follow a three-layer system whenever you head uphill:

  • Base and mid-layer: A breathable merino or synthetic top paired with a packable fleece or lightweight down jacket that fits inside a daypack.
  • Outer shell: A windproof and waterproof jacket to block the katabatic mountain gusts funnelled down the Little and Big Almatinka valleys.
  • High-UV protection: At 2,500 to 3,200 metres, ultraviolet radiation reflects intensely off granite scree and snow. Pack category-3 sunglasses, lip balm, and high-SPF sunscreen year-round.

Footwear for urban aryks and steppe canyons

In the city centre, streets slope steadily uphill and pavements are bordered by deep, uncovered concrete drainage channels (aryks) crossed by small footbridges; supportive walking trainers or leather boots prevent twisted ankles. For day trips to Charyn Canyon or Lake Kaindy, wear closed-toe trail shoes with lugged rubber soles that grip loose red sandstone gravel and limestone roots.

Religious sites, theatres, and bathhouses

Almaty is a cosmopolitan, fashion-conscious city where smart-casual attire suits coffee houses, wine bars, and performances at the Abai Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theatre. When stepping inside Russian Orthodox churches such as Ascension (Zenkov) Cathedral or Saint Nicholas Cathedral, as well as the Central Mosque, men should remove hats and wear trousers, while women should cover shoulders and carry a lightweight scarf to drape over their hair. If you plan to visit the Arasan Baths, pack a swimsuit, rubber flip-flops, and a felt sauna cap (shapka) to protect your head in the high-heat steam rooms.
