Asmara 3-Day Itinerary: Modernist Icons, Markets and Escarpment
Three unhurried days covering UNESCO modernist landmarks, Medeber Market, macchiato bars and the Rift escarpment.
Three days in Asmara gives you time to lodge your regional travel permit on the first morning, explore the UNESCO World Heritage modernist core and artisan markets on foot over the first two days, and venture out to the Great Rift Valley escarpment on day three once your permit is stamped. Bring all required US dollar or euro cash before you fly; see our practical briefing.
Day 1: Permit Application, Harnet Avenue, the Three Faiths & Cinema Impero
- Morning: start with a foamy macchiato and pastry at Bar Vittoria or Pasticceria Moderna, exchange cash at the official Himbol bureau, and lodge your passport details at your tour agency or the Ministry of Tourism office on Harnet Avenue for your regional permit.
- Late Morning: visit the 1923 Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary and climb its 52-metre brick campanile for panoramic views over the plateau.
- Midday: walk the triangle of faiths to see the travertine courtyard of the Al Khulafa Al Rashiudin Mosque and the mosaic facade of Enda Mariam Orthodox Cathedral, followed by zigni and shiro on sour injera for lunch.
- Afternoon & Evening: admire the 1937 Art Deco facade and circular porthole lights of Cinema Impero and the 1916 Opera House, then join the evening passeggiata along Harnet Avenue.
Day 2: Fiat Tagliero, Cinema Roma, Medeber Market & Tank Graveyard
- Morning: walk down Godana Sematat to photograph the 15-metre cantilevered concrete wings of the 1938 Futurist Fiat Tagliero Service Station, pausing at Cinema Roma on the way back for an espresso in its curved marble foyer.
- Midday: stroll through the covered Central Market, then spend an hour exploring the Medeber Open-Air Recycling Market as smiths forge coffee roasters and stoves from reclaimed metal.
- Afternoon: take a yellow taxi to the Tank Graveyard and the Commonwealth War Cemetery, finishing with a three-round Eritrean bun coffee ceremony roasted with frankincense.
- Evening: bowl a game at the vintage 1950s Asmara Bowling Alley and dine on handmade pasta with a cold Asmara Beer.
Day 3: Railway Depot & Escarpment Cloud Forest (or Qohaito Ruins)
- Morning: collect your stamped permit and visit the Asmara Railway Station (by prior arrangement) to see the preserved Ansaldo Mallet steam locomotives and 1930s Fiat Littorina railcars.
- Afternoon Option A (Filfil Cloud Forest & Escarpment): drive thirty minutes east to the edge of the 2,325-metre plateau near Bet Gergis and descend the switchbacks of the Filfil green belt road, watching clouds surge up from the Red Sea plain.
- Afternoon Option B (Qohaito Highland Canyon): take a full-day excursion south across the sycamore valleys of Adi Keyh to the pre-Aksumite sandstone pillars and canyon cliffs of Qohaito before returning to Asmara.
