Where to Stay in Chiang Mai: Old City, Nimman and Riverside

Comparing leafy Lanna guesthouses inside the Old City moat, trendy Nimmanhaemin and peaceful Ping River resorts.

Chiang Mai's accommodation is famous for its character and value, centring on low-rise Lanna-style teak architecture, shaded frangipani courtyards and salt-water swimming pools rather than generic high-rise towers. Your choice comes down to three distinct atmospheres within fifteen minutes of each other: historic temple lanes inside the moat, contemporary café culture in Nimman, or tranquil river views along the Ping.

Inside the Old City Moat (best first-timer base for temples and walking)

For a first trip to Chiang Mai, staying inside the 1.6-kilometre square moat is hard to beat. Once you step off the main Perimeter moat road into the quiet residential sois around Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang or Rachamankha Road, traffic drops away to bicycles and pedestrians. You can walk to thirty historic temples, morning alms rounds, khao soi noodle shops and the entire Sunday Tha Phae Walking Street without needing a taxi. Expect boutique courtyard hotels crafted from dark Burmese teak and celadon tiles, ranging from family-run guesthouses to serene five-star heritage compounds.

Nimmanhaemin / Nimman (best for speciality coffee, dining and modern boutiques)

Stretching between Huay Kaew Road and Suthep Road ten minutes north-west of the moat toward Chiang Mai University, Nimmanhaemin Road (Soi 1 to Soi 17) is the city's modern creative quarter. Its leafy side lanes are packed with third-wave coffee roasters, bakery cafés, contemporary northern Thai bistros, craft cocktail bars, galleries and sleek mid-range design hotels. Keep one practical detail in mind: Nimman sits directly inline with the runway of Chiang Mai Airport, so you will hear daytime aircraft passing overhead (though flights wind down by late evening); ask for a quiet inner room with solid glazing if you are a light sleeper.

Tha Phae Gate East and Chang Moi (between the moat and Warorot Market)

Just outside the eastern moat gate along Tha Phae Road and the historic rattan-and-basketwork lanes of Chang Moi, you sit halfway between the Old City temples and the lively daytime stalls of Warorot Market and the Ping River, with thriving indie cafés and easy pick-up points for morning highland excursions.

Ping River and Wat Ket (tranquil riverside resorts and gardens)

Two kilometres east of the moat along the banks of the Mae Ping River (especially around the pedestrian Iron Bridge and the historic teak shophouses of Charoen Rat Road in Wat Ket), the pace slows right down. Here you will find Chiang Mai's most luxurious low-rise riverside resorts, antique galleries and waterfront restaurants looking across the water toward Doi Suthep. Fit your chosen base into our three-day Chiang Mai itinerary.
