Chiang Mai 3-Day Itinerary: Lanna Temples, Doi Suthep and Highlands
A three-day route combining Old City Lanna temples, the climb to Doi Suthep, Nimman cafés and a highland day trip.
This three-day route keeps your walking cool by scheduling outdoor temple courtyards and mountain trails in the morning, saving shaded coffee roasters for the warm afternoon, and coming back out at dusk for northern street food. Read our before-you-go briefing before you start.
Day 1: Old City Lanna Temples, Khao Soi, Warorot Market & North Gate Food
- Morning inside the moat: begin at Tha Phae Gate and walk west along Ratchadamnoen Road; visit the teak hall of Wat Phan Tao and the towering brick stupa of Wat Chedi Luang.
- Late morning: walk north to Wat Chiang Man (1296) to see its elephant-supported chedi, then head west to Wat Phra Singh for the gilded Lion Buddha and northern murals inside Viharn Lai Kham.
- Lunchtime: sit down for a steaming bowl of khao soi curry noodles with crispy egg noodles, pickled mustard greens and lime at an Old City shophouse.
- Afternoon: stroll east through the rattan workshops of Chang Moi to Warorot Market (Kad Luang) and cross the pedestrian bridge into quiet Wat Ket along the Ping River.
- Evening: explore the weekend Wua Lai or Tha Phae Walking Street, or head to the Chang Phueak (North Gate) night stalls for five-spice stewed pork leg on rice (khao kha moo).
Day 2: The Monk's Trail to Wat Pha Lat, Doi Suthep & Nimmanhaemin
- Early morning: take a red songthaew or Grab behind Chiang Mai University and hike the shaded 45-minute Monk's Trail to the stream-side jungle monastery of Wat Pha Lat.
- Mid-morning: catch a shared red songthaew up the mountain road to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep; climb the 306 naga steps to circle the golden stupa and admire the valley panorama.
- Afternoon in Nimman: ride down to Baan Kang Wat and Nimmanhaemin Road (Soi 1 to 17) for a northern lunch of sai oua herb sausage, nam prik noom and sticky rice followed by single-origin northern Thai pour-over coffee.
- Sunset: visit the whitewashed royal mausoleums of Wat Suan Dok before a dinner of gaeng hang lay ginger pork curry.
Day 3: Doi Inthanon National Park OR an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary
- Option A (Doi Inthanon National Park): depart early for Thailand's 2,565-metre summit to walk the Ang Ka Luang cloud-forest boardwalk and the guided Kew Mae Pan ridge trail, visit the Twin Royal Pagodas and stop at Wachirathan Waterfall.
- Option B (Ethical Elephant Sanctuary): spend the day at a pre-booked, observation-first no-riding elephant valley in Mae Taeng or Mae Wang before flying south to Phuket or taking the sleeper train to Bangkok.
