Best Time to Visit Djibouti City

Pleasant 29°C winter days and whale shark season from November to February versus extreme summer heat.

Timing is crucial when planning a trip to Djibouti City. Sitting on a low coastal plain at the edge of the Danakil depression and the Red Sea, Djibouti has one of the warmest year-round climates on earth. Instead of four temperate seasons, the year splits into a pleasant, breezy Cool Season (October to April) and a fiercely hot Summer Season (May to September). For almost every traveller, the ideal window is November to February.

Peak Winter and Whale Shark Season (November, December, January and February) brings the most comfortable weather of the year. Daytime highs in Djibouti City sit around 29°C to 30°C with warm evenings around 22°C to 24°C, cooled by steady easterly breezes blowing in from the Gulf of Aden. Crucially, from late October through January (often extending into February), nutrient-rich currents funnel into the western recesses of the Gulf of Tadjoura, triggering plankton blooms that attract dozens of juvenile whale sharks near Arta Plage and Ras Korali. Winter is also the only comfortable season to walk out across the salt crust of Lake Assal, which sits 155 metres below sea level and acts as a natural solar oven in warmer months.

Shoulder Months (October, March and April) bring calm, glassy seas and superb underwater visibility around Moucha and Maskali Islands. Afternoon temperatures rise to between 32°C and 34°C with increasing humidity, so plan your walks around Place Ménélik and Marché Central right after breakfast or just before sunset.

The Scorching Summer and Khamsin Season (May, June, July, August and September) is extreme. From June to August, dry, furnace-like Khamsin (also called Sabéli) winds blow down from the inland desert and the Arabian Peninsula, pushing afternoon temperatures in the city past 41°C to 43°C and driving temperatures inside the Lake Assal crater above 50°C. Many dive operators scale back boat schedules in peak summer. If work brings you to Djibouti between May and September, book a seafront hotel in Héron or Plateau du Serpent and schedule all outdoor errands at dawn.
