Best Time to Visit Ephesus
When to go for comfortable weather and fewer tour groups.
If you have a choice, go in April, May, late September or October. The weather is warm, the light is good, and you won't spend half the visit hunting for shade.
Summer is the difficult season. From mid-June to early September, temperatures on the site often go above 35°C, and the pale marble reflects the heat back up at you. It's also when the cruise ships in Kuşadası are busiest, so the heat and the crowds peak at exactly the same hours. People still visit in August, obviously, and it's fine if you're at the gate when it opens and out by 11. Save the afternoon for the museum, a long lunch or the beach at Pamucak.
Winter is underrated. It can rain, and the opening hours are shorter, but there are days in January and February when you'll have long stretches of Curetes Street almost to yourself. Bring a waterproof jacket and shoes that don't mind wet stone.
November sits in between: cooler, a few rainy days, very few visitors.
Time of day
This matters more than the month. The first hour after opening is the calmest and the coolest. Cruise excursions tend to arrive mid-morning and leave by mid-afternoon, so the last couple of hours before closing are also good, and the low sun turns the Library of Celsus a warm gold.
Cruise schedules
The port of Kuşadası publishes ship arrivals well in advance. If your dates are flexible, pick a day with one ship in port rather than four. It makes a real difference.
Opening hours change between summer and winter and are adjusted each year, so check them on the official museum site shortly before you go.
