Best Time to Visit Eskişehir: Spring River Blooms, Autumn Foliage and Snowy Winters

Why late April-to-June and September-to-October are the golden windows for Porsuk gondolas and the Phrygian Valley.

Sitting at 790 metres above sea level where the Central Anatolian steppe meets the greener hills of the Marmara and Aegean transitions, Eskişehir experiences four crisp seasons, with sunny, low-humidity summers and cold, snowy winters. To enjoy open-air gondola rides on the Porsuk River, outdoor museum courtyards in Odunpazarı and hiking in the Phrygian Valley, the two finest windows are late April to mid-June and September to late October.

Spring (Late April, May and June) is when the city's famous youthful energy peaks. The weeping willows along Adalar turn bright green, tens of thousands of tulips and petunias bloom in Sazova Park, the university semesters are in full swing, and daytime temperatures climb from 19°C in April to 24°C in May and 28°C in June. In May and October, the city also hosts the prestigious Eskişehir International Festival of classical music, jazz, theatre and dance.

Summer (July and August) is warm, dry and sunny by day (averaging 29°C to 32°C, five to seven degrees cooler than the southern coast), and because of the 790-metre steppe altitude, evenings always cool down to a refreshing 15°C to 17°C so you sleep comfortably without heavy air conditioning. Summer is also the only season when the 350-metre artificial sand beach and outdoor pools at Kentpark are open for swimming.

Autumn (September, October and early November) wraps the Porsuk River and Kanlıkavak Park in golden-yellow willow and poplar leaves under crisp 20°C to 26°C skies, ideal weather for climbing the volcanic rock stairs of Yazılıkaya (Midas City) in the Phrygian Valley.

Winter (late November to March) is famously cold in Eskişehir (daytime highs of 3°C to 7°C, dropping to -3°C to -8°C at night with frequent picturesque snowfalls covering the pastel roofs of Odunpazarı and Sazova's Fairytale Castle). While snow makes the city look like a Central European winter postcard, and is the cosiest season for soaking in a 45°C thermal hammam, touring indoor OMM and drinking hot cinnamon boza at Karakedi, dress for sub-zero temperatures.
