What to Wear in Eskişehir: Steppe Evening Layers, Cobblestone Shoes and Winter Coats

Packing for Eskişehir's relaxed university style, steep Odunpazarı cobblestones and brisk Anatolian evenings.

Because Eskişehir is one of Turkey's most progressive, student-led university and arts cities, everyday dress codes are completely relaxed and identical to any European university town: jeans, trainers, linen shirts, summer dresses and casual jackets work everywhere from OMM to the riverside pubs of Adalar. Where visitors get caught out in Eskişehir is not dress etiquette, but underestimating how fast the dry steppe air cools down after sunset and how cold winter winds can be.

Four Practical Packing Rules for Eskişehir

  1. Always Pack an Evening Jacket or Jumper (Even in June, July and August): travellers arriving on the train from humid Istanbul or hot Izmir in summer often pack only shorts and T-shirts. In Eskişehir (at 790m elevation on the open steppe), a sunny 30°C afternoon drops rapidly to 14°C to 16°C late in the evening. Always bring a denim jacket, sweatshirt or light windbreaker for evening walks along the Porsuk River.
  2. Cushioned Trainers or Flat Walking Shoes with Rubber Tread: you will easily log 15,000 steps a day in Eskişehir between the uphill river-stone cobbles of Odunpazarı, the 40-hectare lake loop of Sazova Park and the rock-carved staircases of the Phrygian Valley (Yazılıkaya). Leave thin smooth-soled sandals and heels behind.
  1. Serious Winter Insulation from November to March ("Eskişehir Ayazı"): locals have a special word for Eskişehir's dry, biting winter frost: ayaz. If you visit between late November and mid-March, pack a proper down or heavy wool winter coat, thermal base layers, a beanie hat that covers your ears, lined gloves, a scarf and non-slip winter boots for icy morning bridges.
  2. Swimwear (Summer Beach OR Year-Round Thermal Spas): bring a swimsuit both in summer (for the 350-metre artificial sand beach and pools at Kentpark) and in autumn/winter if you are staying at or visiting a modern 45°C thermal spa in Odunpazarı/Bademlik. Check seasonal weather before boarding your train.
