Best Time to Visit Florianópolis: Subtropical Seasons, Summer Surf and Whales

Month-by-month climate guide to Florianópolis using official 1991-2020 INMET normals, comparing the warm December-March beach season, golden autumn, and winter whale watching.

Situated at 27°35' south latitude (nearly 500 kilometres south of the Tropic of Capricorn), Florianópolis has a humid subtropical coastal climate (Köppen Cfa) that is markedly different from tropical Rio de Janeiro or Salvador. According to official 1991 to 2020 INMET climate normals, the island experiences four genuine seasons: a hot, humid Atlantic beach summer from December to March, a mild golden autumn from April to May, a crisp 20°C winter from June to August, and a blooming spring from September to November.

December to March: Peak Subtropical Beach Summer

From December through March, daytime highs average 27.6°C to 28.9°C (peaking in February at 28.9°C with warm overnight lows of 21.5°C), and the Atlantic Ocean warms to 24°C to 26°C, especially inside the sheltered northern coves of Jurerê, Daniela, and Canasvieiras. Summer brings long 14-hour days, lively beach kiosks, and late-afternoon convective sun-showers (averaging 12 to 13 rain days per month).

  • Tip on Late March: If you want warm 28.0°C air and 25°C ocean water for swimming at Ilha do Campeche without the New Year (Réveillon) or February Carnival traffic, the second half of March is the single best beach window of the year.

April to May and October to November: The Golden Shoulder Months

  • April and May (Subtropical Autumn): The favourite season of local surfers and hikers. Average afternoon highs sit at a comfortable 25.9°C in April and 23.2°C in May, rainfall drops noticeably to 8 or 9 days per month under crisp, cloudless blue skies, and the coastal trails to Lagoinha do Leste and Naufragados are cool and uncrowded. Autumn also kicks off the traditional May-to-July artisanal mullet fishing season (Safra da Tainha), when beach lookouts spot schools of silver mullet and fresh grilled tainha fills every menu.
  • October and November (Spring): Daytime temperatures climb back to 23.7°C to 25.6°C, the national Fenaostra oyster festival celebrates the island's mariculture heritage, and hotel rates in Lagoa da Conceição and Jurerê remain well below summer peaks.

June to September: Winter Gastronomic Season & Southern Right Whales

During the austral winter (June, July, and August), afternoon highs average 20.5°C to 21.3°C with crisp 12.7°C to 13.5°C nights and the lowest rainfall of the year (only 7 to 8 rain days per month). While the ocean is chilly for casual swimming without a wetsuit, colder bay waters produce the plumpest, sweetest oysters at Santo Antônio de Lisboa, and between July and November migrating southern right whales (baleia-franca-austral) nurse their calves right inside the coves of southern Florianópolis, Guarda do Embaú, and Garopaba.
