Florianópolis
Spanning the 54-kilometre-long Atlantic barrier island of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, Florianópolis pairs 42 official beaches, coastal sand dunes, and prehistoric rock petroglyphs with eighteenth-century Azorean fishing villages and farm-fresh Pacific oysters.
Quick decisions
- How many days? Plan at least 3 to 4 full days: one day for Centro, Ponte Hercílio Luz, and Santo Antônio de Lisboa, one day for Lagoa da Conceição and the eastern surf beaches, and one to two days for Ilha do Campeche or the southern trails.
- Where should I stay? Stay around Lagoa da Conceição for a central base near restaurants, dunes, and eastern beaches; in Jurerê Internacional for calm, warm family waters in the north; or in Campeche for wide sandy beaches and surf.
- Do I need a car? Ride-hailing apps (Uber and 99) and municipal buses connect Centro, Lagoa da Conceição, and the beaches, while renting a car outside peak New Year week makes hopping between northern and southern coves faster.
- Best for: Surfing and sandboarding on coastal dunes, boat trips to crystal-clear Ilha do Campeche, Atlantic Rainforest coastal hikes (Lagoinha do Leste), and sunset oyster tastings in 1750s Azorean villages.
- Before you go: Unlike tropical northern Brazil, Florianópolis has four distinct seasons: December to March brings hot 28°C to 29°C beach weather, April and May offer sunny 24°C to 26°C hiking days, and July to November is southern right whale season.
- Getting around: The island runs on an integrated bus terminal network (TICEN in Centro, TILAG at Lagoa da Conceição, TISAN in the north, TIRIO in the south), supplemented by scenic Cooperbarco water-bus boats across Lagoa da Conceição to car-free Costa da Lagoa.
- Continue your trip: Pair Florianópolis with a day trip 46 km south to Guarda do Embaú and Garopaba, or fly 90 minutes west to Foz do Iguaçu to experience the 275 cascades of Iguazu Falls.
Overview
Set at 27 degrees south latitude along the Atlantic coast of southern Brazil, Florianópolis (affectionately known as Floripa or the Ilha da Magia) occupies 97 percent of Santa Catarina Island plus a compact continental promontory across a 500-metre marine strait. Spanning 54 kilometres from north to south, the island combines 42 official beaches, shifting white sand dunes, two large interior lagoons, eighteenth-century Azorean fishing parishes, and 95 percent of Brazil's cultivated oyster harvest.
Getting there
Direct domestic and South American flights land at Hercílio Luz International Airport (FLN, Floripa Airport) in southern Santa Catarina Island, 12 kilometres south of downtown via the Via Expressa Sul, while interstate buses arrive at the waterfront Terminal Rodoviário Rita Maria.
Where to stay
Base yourself in central Lagoa da Conceição or Barra da Lagoa for easy access to eastern surf beaches and lagoon boats, in northern Jurerê Internacional or Daniela for calm, warm family swimming waters, or in southeastern Campeche facing Ilha do Campeche.
Things to do
Walk across the restored 819-metre 1926 Ponte Hercílio Luz suspension bridge, ride the Cooperbarco wooden boat across Lagoa da Conceição to car-free Costa da Lagoa, sandboard the Dunas da Joaquina, boat to the turquoise cove and ancient petroglyphs of Ilha do Campeche, hike to wild Lagoinha do Leste, and watch sunset in 1750 Azorean Santo Antônio de Lisboa.
Food and drink
Celebrated since 2014 as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, Florianópolis is famous for raw and gratinéed Santa Catarina Pacific oysters in Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Ribeirão da Ilha, five-course Sequência de Camarão prawn feasts on Lagoa da Conceição, winter charcoal-grilled tainha mullet, and flaky pastéis de berbigão at the 1899 Mercado Público.
Culture
Settled between 1748 and 1756 by more than 6,000 immigrants from the Azores Archipelago alongside ancient Carijó Guarani and shell-mound heritage, the island preserves whitewashed baroque parishes, traditional wooden baleeira boats, and delicate renda de bilro bobbin lace.
