Best Time to Visit Hanoi
Golden autumn months, crisp northern winters, misty spring drizzle and tropical summer downpours.
Unlike tropical southern Vietnam around Ho Chi Minh City, which stays hot twelve months a year, northern Hanoi experiences four distinct seasons. For clear skies, low humidity and comfortable walking weather across the Old Quarter and surrounding countryside, the standout windows are autumn (October to November) and mid-spring (late March to April).
Autumn (October and November) is cherished by Hanoians themselves as the finest season of the year. After the summer monsoon retreats, daytime temperatures settle into a pleasant 24°C to 28°C with crisp, dry breezes, golden sunlight and cooler evenings. Street vendors carry baskets of green young sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves (com), an autumn speciality sold around Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter, and visibility is ideal for boat trips in Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay.
Winter (December to February) surprises many travellers who pack only for the tropics. When northeast monsoon fronts sweep down from continental China, daytime highs drop to 16°C to 20°C and nighttime temperatures can dip toward 12°C, feeling cooler still because of high air humidity and unheated stone interiors. December is relatively dry and brisk, whereas late January and February bring fine, misty drizzle (known locally as mua phun) and festive kumquat trees and pink peach blossoms ahead of Tet (Lunar New Year). Winter is magnificent weather for hot bowls of beef pho and sizzling cha ca.
Spring (March and April) sees temperatures climb steadily back into the mid-20s as lingering mist clears into bright April sunshine, kapok and bauhinia trees bloom around West Lake, and the rice paddies of Tam Coc turn vivid green before summer heat builds.
Summer (May to September) is hot, humid and tropical, with afternoon highs regularly reaching 32°C to 35°C alongside heavy late-afternoon downpours between June and August. If you visit in summer, adopt the local routine: explore outdoor sights like the Temple of Literature and Ba Dinh Square right after dawn, retreat to air-conditioned museums and shady cafes at midday, and return to the lakeside promenades after dusk. Check what to wear in Hanoi before packing.
