Harare 3-Day Itinerary: Shona Sculpture, Granite Domes and Wildlife

Three days combining Harare's master stone sculptors, Epworth's balancing rocks and sunset on Domboshava.

Three days in Harare lets you experience the capital's twin strengths without rushing: world-class Shona stone sculpture set in woodland gardens, and the ancient granite geology and wildlife of the Mashonaland plateau. Arrange a reliable local driver or hire car for Days 2 and 3, and carry crisp small bills for park gates; see our practical briefing.

  • Morning: start under the jacaranda and palm trees of Harare Gardens and step into the National Gallery of Zimbabwe to explore its split-level exhibition halls and courtyard of Shona stone sculpture, followed by the archaeological displays at the nearby Museum of Human Sciences.
  • Lunch: head north into Belgravia or Avondale for a traditional garden lunch of sadza rezviyo (nutty finger-millet porridge), slow-braised roadrunner chicken or oxtail, and muriwo unedovi greens in roasted peanut-butter sauce.
  • Afternoon: drive east to Doon Estate in Msasa to spend two unhurried hours walking the woodland lawns of Chapungu Sculpture Park, viewing monumental springstone and serpentine works by first-generation masters and chatting with resident carvers at the outdoor studio.
  • Evening: dine at a suburban courtyard restaurant in Newlands or Highland Park.

Day 2: Epworth Balancing Rocks, Mukuvisi Woodlands & Wild Is Life

  • Morning: drive thirteen kilometres south-east to the Chiremba Balancing Rocks in Epworth while the morning light catches the stacked granite corestones, including the famous three-tier formation featured on Zimbabwean banknotes.
  • Late morning and lunch: return to nearby Mukuvisi Woodlands for a guided walk or horseback safari through 263 hectares of miombo bushveld to spot giraffe, zebra, sable antelope and impala, followed by lunch at a garden café.
  • Afternoon: if booked weeks ahead, spend the late afternoon at the Wild Is Life and ZEN wildlife sanctuary near the airport; otherwise, stroll among the baobab and lowveld collections of the National Botanic Garden in Alexandra Park.

Day 3: Avondale Craft Market, Borrowdale & Sunset on Domboshava

  • Morning: browse woven Binga baskets, textiles and small stone carvings at Avondale Flea Market, then drive up to the summit of the Kopje for a wide view over central Harare.
  • Lunch: enjoy coffee and lunch along the open-air brick lanes of Sam Levy's Village in Borrowdale.
  • Late afternoon and sunset: continue thirty kilometres north to Domboshava, hiking up the lichen-streaked granite dome to see the 6,000-year-old San rock paintings in the eastern cave before watching sunset from the summit boulders and returning to your hotel in northern Harare.
