Best Time to Visit Harare

Sunny Highveld winters, the purple jacaranda blossom of September and October, and green summer afternoons.

Thanks to its 1,490-metre elevation on the central Highveld plateau, Harare avoids the sticky tropical heat of the Zambezi Valley and enjoys one of the most comfortable year-round climates in Africa. For clear skies and mild walking weather, come during the dry winter and spring from May to October, with a special highlight in late September and October when the jacarandas bloom.

Cool Dry Season (May to August) brings cloudless blue skies, crisp highland air and virtually zero rainfall. Daytime temperatures sit between 21°C and 24°C, ideal for climbing the sunlit granite slopes of Domboshava or strolling through Mukuvisi Woodlands without breaking a sweat. Because the air is dry and high, temperatures drop rapidly as soon as the sun sets: June and July nights regularly dip to 6°C or 7°C, and suburban guesthouses light wood fires in the evening.

Jacaranda Spring (September and October) is visually the most dramatic time to see the capital. From mid-September through October, thousands of mature jacaranda trees planted along avenues in Montagu Avenue, Belgravia, Milton Park, Newlands and Highlands burst into violet-purple blossom, carpeting the pavements in petals. By October, afternoon temperatures climb to 28°C or 29°C before the first clouds build; later in the season, scarlet flamboyant (Delonix regia) and purple-blue pride of India trees take over the display.

Green Rainy Season (November to March) transforms the dry gold Highveld into lush emerald woodland. Unlike coastal monsoons that grey out the sky for days, Harare's summer rains usually arrive as exhilarating late-afternoon thundershowers after bright, warm mornings (26°C to 27°C). This is the prime season for wild mushrooms (howa) in local markets and migrating woodland birds in Mukuvisi, though wet granite on Domboshava can be slippery during a downpour.

Autumn Transition (April) is a lovely quiet shoulder month: the rains taper off, the msasa trees flush in copper and russet tones, and daytime highs hover around a gentle 25°C. Check what to wear in Harare before packing.
