Best Time to Visit Ho Chi Minh City

Dry season sunshine from December to April, Tet flower streets and brief monsoon afternoon showers.

Sitting just ten degrees north of the Equator in southern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City has a warm tropical savanna climate divided into two seasons rather than four: the sunny dry season from December to April and the humid wet season from May to November. Daytime temperatures hover between 30°C and 35°C all year round, so timing your visit is primarily about rainfall and humidity.

The Dry Season (December to March) is the most comfortable time to explore Ho Chi Minh City on foot. December and January bring the lowest humidity of the year, clear blue mornings and balmy evenings around 22°C to 24°C, ideal for walking between District 1's colonial landmarks, sitting at open-air rooftop bars and taking boat trips into the Mekong Delta. In late January or February, the city celebrates Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year): the entire length of Nguyen Hue Walking Street transforms into a floral boulevard carpeted in yellow apricot blossoms (hoa mai), marigolds and kumquat trees, while lion dances echo around the Cantonese temples of Cholon.

Late Dry Season (March and April) remains virtually rain-free, though temperatures climb to their annual peak (often reaching 35°C to 36°C at midday in April) before the seasonal winds shift.

The Wet Season (May to November) should not put you off visiting if you plan your daily rhythm wisely. Unlike northern typhoons that can bring days of continuous grey drizzle, Saigon's southwest monsoon typically follows a predictable clockwork pattern: mornings start bright and sunny, cumulus clouds build through the early afternoon, and a dramatic, cooling tropical downpour falls for an hour or two in the late afternoon before clearing in time for evening street-food crawls. Use the midday and mid-afternoon window for indoor sights like the Independence Palace, War Remnants Museum and Fine Arts Museum, or duck into a multi-storey cafe apartment until the shower passes. September and October see the highest monthly rainfall totals. Check what to wear in Ho Chi Minh City before you pack.
