Where to Stay in Ho Chi Minh City: Best Districts Compared

Comparing central District 1 around Dong Khoi and Ben Thanh, leafy District 3 and riverside Thao Dien.

Because Ho Chi Minh City's sightseeing landmarks cluster tightly around the historical core while traffic can slow cross-town journeys at rush hour, choosing the right district saves you hours in taxis. For a three- or four-day visit, staying in central District 1 or neighbouring District 3 keeps almost every major sight within a fifteen-minute walk or short ride.

District 1: Dong Khoi, Nguyen Hue & the Opera House (best all-round base)

The riverside eastern half of District 1 around Dong Khoi Street, Nguyen Hue Walking Street and Lam Son Square is the most polished and walkable base in the city. Step outside your hotel and you are five minutes on foot from the Opera House, Central Post Office, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Bach Dang Waterbus Pier and the underground Opera House station on Saigon Metro Line 1. Accommodation here ranges from storied colonial heritage icons (such as the Continental, Caravelle and Majestic) to five-star skyscraper hotels and quiet boutique properties tucked down side lanes off Le Thanh Ton and Mac Thi Buoi streets.

District 1 West: Ben Thanh Market & Tao Dan Park (central midrange hub)

Immediately west of Nguyen Hue around Ben Thanh Market, Ly Tu Trong Street and shaded Tao Dan Park, you sit right at the geometric centre of Saigon: halfway between the riverfront and the Independence Palace, and directly above the central Ben Thanh Metro interchange and airport bus terminus. This pocket holds the widest selection of modern mid-range boutique hotels with rooftop plunge pools. Note that a few blocks further south lies the backpacker nightlife strip of Bui Vien Walking Street (Pham Ngu Lao); unless you want late-night bass music outside your window, book north of Le Lai Street.

District 3 & Da Kao (leafy French villas, museums and local cafe life)

Bordering District 1 directly to the north-west across Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, District 3 (along with adjacent Da Kao in northern District 1) feels noticeably greener and more local. Shaded by towering mahogany trees around Turtle Lake (Ho Con Rua) and the War Remnants Museum, its quiet alleyways (hem) hide restored French villas, architectural coffee roasters and some of Saigon's best noodle and banh xeo kitchens, all ten minutes from the airport and downtown.

Thao Dien / Former District 2 (riverside dining on Metro Line 1)

Set in a leafy loop of the Saigon River fifteen minutes east of downtown via Metro Line 1 (Thao Dien and An Phu stations), Thao Dien offers low-rise boutique hotels, garden bistros, contemporary art spaces and swimming pools suited to families and longer stays.
