Kigali 3-Day Itinerary: Memorials, Markets, Art and Wetlands
Three well-paced days across Kigali's memorials, contemporary art studios, kitenge markets and eco-parks.
This three-day route groups Kigali's sights by hillside ridge so you spend less time crossing valleys and more time enjoying galleries, markets and open-air terraces. Before packing, review our practical briefing on Rwanda's plastic bag ban and Umuganda Saturdays.
Day 1: Kigali Genocide Memorial, Central Ridge & Kimihurura
- Morning: begin on Gisozi hill at the Kigali Genocide Memorial; take two hours with the audio guide to walk through the three indoor historical halls, the Children's Room and the outdoor Gardens of Reflection.
- Midday: cross to the central ridge in Kiyovu for lunch overlooking the valleys, then stroll along the tree-lined, pedestrianised Imbuga City Walk and stop at the Kandt House Museum.
- Afternoon: head east to Kimihurura to visit the Campaign Against Genocide Museum at Parliament and enjoy a single-origin bourbon arabica pour-over at Question Coffee in Gishushu.
- Evening: watch the spiral lattice of the Kigali Convention Centre light up at dusk before dining at one of Kimihurura's garden restaurants.
Day 2: Nyamirambo, Custom Kitenge at Kimironko & Kacyiru Art Studios
- Morning: head to Kimironko Market while the aisles are cool; sample tree tomatoes and passion fruit, buy a bottle of yellow akabanga chilli oil, and choose a wax-print kitenge fabric for a market tailor to sew into a custom shirt or tote bag.
- Midday: spend the early afternoon in Kacyiru visiting Inema Arts Centre and Niyo Arts Gallery to see contemporary Rwandan canvases, sculptures and Imigongo geometric art.
- Afternoon: join a guided community walk from the Nyamirambo Women's Centre through the lively streets of Kigali's oldest quarter.
- Evening: pull up a chair on cobblestoned Biryogo Car-Free Street in Nyamirambo for a flask of spiced ginger milk tea (icyayi), warm chapatis and charcoal-grilled goat or sambaza fish brochettes with mizuzu plantains.
Day 3: Nyandungu Wetland Eco-Park OR a Day Trip to Akagera / Musanze
- Option A (Urban wetlands and craft shopping in Kigali): spend the morning walking or cycling the ten kilometres of shaded boardwalks and fig forests inside Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-Park, continue ten minutes east to see the rescued grey crowned cranes at Umusambi Village, and enjoy a relaxed afternoon poolside in Kiyovu or Nyarutarama.
- Option B (Full-day national park excursion): depart at dawn with a private 4x4 and driver-guide either east to Akagera National Park for a savanna game drive and Lake Ihema boat ride, or north-west to Musanze (Volcanoes National Park) for the Dian Fossey Campus and crater foothills.
