Best Time to Visit Kigali
Year-round spring temperatures at 1,500m, the June-to-September dry season and lush green months.
Despite lying just two degrees south of the equator, Kigali enjoys an eternal spring climate thanks to its altitude of roughly 1,500 metres above sea level. Daytime highs remain remarkably steady between 26°C and 28°C in every month of the year, while nights cool down to a comfortable 15°C to 17°C. Choosing when to visit comes down to matching Rwanda's two dry and two rainy seasons with your plans for city walks and national park excursions.
The Long Dry Season (June to early September) is the most popular time to visit Kigali and Rwanda as a whole. Rainfall drops to almost nothing in June, July and August, trails in Volcanoes National Park and Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-Park are dry underfoot, and the evening air along the car-free streets of Nyamirambo and Biryogo is crisp and clear. Early September also brings Kwita Izina, Rwanda's annual baby gorilla naming ceremony in Kinigi, when Kigali hosts conservation concerts, art exhibitions and cultural events. Because dry-season skies can develop a slight dry haze by late August, early mornings offer the sharpest hillside views.
The Short Dry Season (mid-December to February) offers a wonderful second window. After the October and November rains have washed the atmosphere clean, the hills around Kigali gleam bright emerald, birdlife in Nyandungu and Umusambi Village is active with Palearctic migrants, and afternoon skies stay mostly sunny with only occasional brief showers.
The Short Rains (October and November) and Long Rains (March to May) bring regular cloudbursts, heaviest in April. Even in the wettest months, rain in Kigali rarely falls as a grey all-day drizzle; instead, heavy tropical showers roll across the valleys for an hour or two before the sun breaks through again, leaving photographers with dramatic cloudscapes, lower hotel rates in Kiyovu and Kimihurura, and crystal-clear views across the ridges.
