Inema Arts Centre, Nyandungu Eco-Park and Day Trips

Contemporary Rwandan art studios in Kacyiru, restored wetland trails at Nyandungu and safari day trips.

Over the past decade, Kigali has paired its urban renewal with two inspiring movements: a wave of artist-led studios across the hills of Kacyiru and Kimihurura, and the ecological restoration of degraded valley swamps into public wetland parks.

Kigali's contemporary visual art scene is concentrated along the leafy avenues of Kacyiru and Kimihurura, where you can step straight into working studios and chat with resident painters and sculptors:

  • Inema Arts Centre (KG 563 St, Kacyiru): founded in 2012 by self-taught brothers Emmanuel Nkuranga and Innocent Nkurunziza, this two-storey hillside gallery and sculpture garden showcases bold abstract canvases, mixed-media metalwork, traditional Intore youth dance rehearsals and an outdoor terrace overlooking the valley.
  • Niyo Arts Centre and Choose Kigali: nearby in Kacyiru and Kiyovu, Niyo combines a colourful gallery and drumming courtyard with community support for street children, while studio spaces around Kimihurura exhibit contemporary photography and geometric Imigongo spirals (traditionally moulded from cow dung and coloured with natural white kaolin, red ochre and black ash).

Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-Tourism Park, Umusambi and day trips

Down in the eastern valley between Kicukiro and Gasabo along the airport corridor, Nyandungu Eco-Park demonstrates how Kigali is rewilding its floodplains. Once a degraded quarry and brick-making marsh, this 121-hectare wetland has been replanted with tens of thousands of indigenous fig trees, fever acacias and papyrus reeds. Ten kilometres of paved cycling and walking paths wind past the Pope's Garden (where Pope John Paul II celebrated mass in 1990), a medicinal plant garden cataloguing traditional Kinyarwanda herbal remedies, and quiet viewing decks where malachite kingfishers, palm-nut vultures and grey crowned cranes feed. Ten minutes further east, Umusambi Village offers a second tranquil wetland walk among rescued cranes.

If you have a full spare day with a private 4x4 and driver, Rwanda's compact size lets you reach two world-class national parks and return to your Kigali hotel by nightfall: drive two and a half hours east to the southern gate of Akagera National Park for a Big Five savanna game drive and boat safari on Lake Ihema, or head two and a half hours north-west to Musanze (Volcanoes National Park) for golden monkey trekking and the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
