Maui Humpback Whale Watching (December to April): Best Boats & Free Shore Viewpoints
Watching 40-tonne Humpback Whales breach in the shallow nursery waters between Maui, Lana'i and Kaho'olawe from December to April.
If you visit Maui between 15 December and 15 April (with the peak running from mid-January through March), you witness one of the greatest wildlife migrations on the planet: over 10,000 North Pacific Humpback Whales (Kohola in Hawaiian) swim 4,800 kilometres (3,000 miles) nonstop from their icy summer feeding grounds in Alaska down to the warm, 25°C waters of Maui to mate, give birth and nurse their newborn calves.
1. Why Maui's 'Au'au Channel Is the Premier Humpback Whale Nursery
While the ocean around Kaua'i, O'ahu and the Big Island drops off steeply to 3,000 metres deep close to shore, the four islands of Maui, Lana'i, Moloka'i and Kaho'olawe sit atop a single submerged volcanic platform (prehistoric Maui Nui). As a result, the channels between them, the 'Au'au Channel and Ma'alaea Bay, form a warm, sheltered, shallow 40-to-80-metre-deep basin. Mother whales bring their 1-tonne newborn calves here to learn how to breach, slap their 4.5-metre pectoral fins and lobtail, while adult males sing complex underwater songs that you can hear with your bare ears whenever you dip your head underwater while swimming at the beach.
2. Choosing Your Whale Watch Boat & Top Free Roadside Viewpoints
- How to Pick a Boat (Ma'alaea Harbor, Ka'anapali Beach or Kihei Boat Ramp): every boat drops an underwater hydrophone into the water so you can hear live male whale songs through the speakers. Choose a double-deck catamaran (PacWhale Eco-Adventures, Trilogy, Pride of Maui or beach-loading Teralani and Gemini off Ka'anapali Beach) for stability and refreshments, or a low-to-the-water eco-raft (Ultimate Whale Watch or Hawaii Ocean Project) for eye-level photos.
- The Best Free Shore Whale-Watching Lookouts (Bring Binoculars):
- McGregor Point & Papawai Scenic Lookout (Highway 30 Between Ma'alaea & West Maui): elevated 30 metres above the water with free parking, where you can spot dozens of spouts and breaches.
- The Wailea Beach Path & Kapalua Coastal Trail.
