'Iao Valley State Monument (Kuka'emoku Needle), Kepaniwai Gardens & Historic Wailuku

Fifteen minutes from Kahului Airport: walking into a sacred emerald rainforest caldera dominated by the 365-metre 'Iao Needle.

Just 15 minutes west of Kahului Airport (OGG) at the end of 'Iao Valley Road (Highway 32), the sunny central plain of Maui narrows into a cool, mist-shrouded tropical gorge carved deep into the ancient caldera of the West Maui Mountains (Mauna Kahalawai, 'House of Water'), one of the wettest places on Earth: 'Iao Valley State Monument.

1. Visiting 'Iao Valley State Monument (Advance Reservation Required)

Before driving up Highway 32, remember that all non-Hawaii residents must book a timed reservation online at gostateparks.hawaii.gov (check the official site for current parking and entry fees; slots open 30 days ahead):

  • The 365-Metre 'Iao Needle (Kuka'emoku): walk 10 minutes across the arched bridge over rushing 'Iao Stream and climb the 130 paved steps to the breezy pavilion overlook. Towering 365 metres (1,200 feet) straight up from the valley floor is an emerald, vegetation-cloaked volcanic basalt ridge spine known as the 'Iao Needle (sacred in Hawaiian tradition to Kanaloa, god of the ocean).
  • The 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai & Botanical Loop: descend to the lower stream loop to walk through terraced beds of Hawaiian Kalo (taro), breadfruit, ti leaf and kukui nut trees introduced by the first Polynesian voyagers, and read the plaques commemorating the pivotal 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai ('The Damming of the Waters'), where King Kamehameha I united the Hawaiian Islands.

2. Free Stop on the Way Down: 'Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens' & Historic 'Wailuku Town'

  • Kepaniwai Park & Heritage Gardens (1 km Below the Monument Gate, Free Entry): pull in on your drive down the canyon to walk through riverside pavilions celebrating the immigrant cultures that shaped Maui: Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Portuguese, missionary and Native Hawaiian.
  • Wailuku Town (Market Street) & Maui Tropical Plantation (Waikapu): at the mouth of the canyon in historic Wailuku, pick up handmade mochi at family-run Four Sisters Bakery or coffee on Market Street. Then drive eight minutes south on Highway 30 to the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu (Free Entry) to ride the Tropical Express Tram and eat lunch on the lagoon deck of Cafe O'Lei at the Mill House.
