Where to Stay in Munich: Best Neighbourhoods Compared

Six Munich districts compared for walking access, museum proximity, evening life and value.

Munich is compact, safe and tied together by fast U-Bahn and tram lines, so you do not need to pay top rates right on Marienplatz to have an easy stay. Here is how the six best central neighbourhoods compare.

1. Altstadt-Lehel (Best for first-timers and walking everywhere)

Inside the medieval ring around Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz and the Viktualienmarkt, plus the quiet, aristocratic 19th-century streets of Lehel just east toward the Isar and southern English Garden. You can walk to almost every major landmark in ten minutes, though hotel rates here are the highest in the city.

2. Maxvorstadt (Best for art lovers, cafés and mid-range value)

Immediately north-west of the Altstadt around Königsplatz, the Pinakothek museums and the two universities. Tree-lined grid streets filled with bookshops, third-wave coffee bars, student bistros and boutique hotels, just two U-Bahn stops (U2 or U3/U6) or a fifteen-minute walk from Marienplatz. See our Kunstareal guide.

3. Glockenbachviertel and Gärtnerplatz (Best for evening bars and dining)

South of the Viktualienmarkt between Sendlinger Tor and the Isar River, radiating out from the circular flowerbeds and theatre of Gärtnerplatz. By day you have independent boutiques and pavement cafés on Fraunhoferstraße; by evening it is Munich's liveliest neighbourhood for cocktail bars, restaurants and riverside walks.

4. Haidhausen / Au (Best for village charm across the Isar)

Just east of the Isar River around Wiener Platz (which has its own small market and Hofbräukeller beer garden), Rosenheimer Platz and Max-Weber-Platz. Preserved late-19th-century pastel squares, French-Quarter street names (Belfortstraße, Pariser Platz) and a relaxed residential feel ten minutes from Marienplatz by S-Bahn or Tram 19.

5. Schwabing (Best for park access and bohemian history)

Stretching north of the Victory Arch (Siegestor) along the western edge of the English Garden around Münchner Freiheit (U3/U6). Famous at the turn of the 20th century as the home of Thomas Mann, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, with Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) facades and outdoor terraces.

6. Around München Hauptbahnhof (Practical tips before booking)

The area around the main train station has the highest concentration of reasonably priced chain and business hotels and direct airport S-Bahn and Alpine train links. If booking here, choose streets north of the station (around Karlstraße and the Augustiner-Keller heading toward Maxvorstadt) rather than Schillerstraße and Landwehrstraße immediately south of the tracks, which feel gritty and loud at night.
