What to Wear in Nairobi

Dressing for chilly 11°C highland mornings on safari, sunny equatorial afternoons and smart city evenings.

First-time visitors expecting equatorial heat are often surprised by how chilly Nairobi feels at dawn and after dark. At nearly 1,800 metres above sea level, mornings start around 11°C to 14°C before climbing into the mid-20s under strong highland UV sunshine, so peelable layers are the secret to packing well in every month of the year.

Dawn game drives, forest trails and daytime sightseeing

  • A warm fleece, packable down gilet or windproof jacket for early mornings: if you enter Nairobi National Park at sunrise in an open-sided or pop-up-roof 4x4 safari vehicle, the wind chill across the plains is brisk in every season (and positively cold in July and August). Wear a warm outer layer over a breathable cotton t-shirt or linen shirt that you can shed by mid-morning once the sun warms the savannah.
  • Neutral earth tones for wildlife, plus high-SPF sun protection: khaki, olive, sand and stone shades avoid attracting insects and keep red dust from showing during game drives and visits to the elephant nursery or Giraffe Centre. Pair them with polarised sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat that stays secure in a breezy safari vehicle.
  • Closed-toe trainers or light trail shoes: ideal for red-earth forest paths in Karura Forest, garden lawns at the Karen Blixen Museum and uneven museum courtyards after a shower.

City dress sense and important Kenyan rules

Nairobians dress smartly in the city: in Westlands, Gigiri, Karen and the central business district, smart-casual jeans or chinos, collared shirts, midi dresses, tailored trousers and clean trainers or loafers fit right in, with a light wool jumper or blazer for outdoor courtyard restaurants after sunset. Remember two important local rules: camouflage-patterned clothing is illegal for civilians in Kenya (leave all camo print trousers, shorts, jackets and caps at home), and do not pack any single-use plastic carrier bags in your luggage. Check seasonal weather in Nairobi before your trip.
