Where to Stay in Nairobi: Karen, Westlands and Gigiri Compared

Choosing between tranquil garden estates in Karen near the park and lively urban hotels in Westlands.

Because Nairobi is a polycentric city of distinct green ridges rather than a single downtown hotel strip, choosing the right neighbourhood saves hours in traffic and shapes the entire mood of your stay. Decide first whether you want birdsong, sprawling gardens and instant access to wildlife in the south-west, or walkable restaurants, coffee shops and fast Expressway links in the north-west.

Karen and Langata (best for wildlife, garden lodges and bush-flight convenience)

Set on five- and ten-acre wooded plots at the foot of the Ngong Hills, Karen and neighbouring Langata feel more like the English or highland countryside than a capital city. This is where you will find Nairobi's most atmospheric country-house hotels, boutique cottages and luxury garden lodges. You sit ten minutes from the Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen Museum, fifteen minutes from the gates of Nairobi National Park and the Sheldrick elephant nursery, and a short drive down Langata Road from Wilson Airport for morning flights to the Maasai Mara.

Westlands and Museum Hill (best all-round urban base for dining and transit)

Three kilometres north-west of the central business district, Westlands is Nairobi's energetic modern hub. Served directly by its own exit on the elevated Nairobi Expressway from JKIA (making the airport run 20 minutes), Westlands is packed with reliable international four- and five-star hotels, rooftop bars, craft coffee roasters, Indian and East African restaurants, and the Sarit Centre and Westgate malls. You are also five minutes from the Nairobi National Museum and fifteen minutes from Karura Forest.

Gigiri, Runda and Muthaiga (quiet diplomatic avenues beside Karura Forest)

North of Westlands along Limuru Road, Gigiri (home to the United Nations complex and numerous embassies) and historic Muthaiga offer serene, heavily tree-lined streets, upscale boutique hotels and immediate access to the walking trails of Karura Forest and the open-air dining decks of the Village Market.

Kilimani, Lavington and Upper Hill (apartments, bistros and business towers)

Midway between the city centre and Karen, residential Kilimani and Lavington are popular for modern serviced apartments, independent bookshops and relaxed garden cafes around Yaya Centre, while Upper Hill holds modern conference hotels looking out toward the National Park plains. Fit your base into our three-day Nairobi itinerary.
