Best Time to Visit Napa Valley: Sept/Oct 'Crush' Harvest, November Golden Vines & Spring Mustard
Timing your trip for September and October's grape harvest ('Crush'), November's fiery autumn leaves, or February's yellow mustard fields.
Unlike summer beach destinations, Napa Valley's vineyards put on a completely different visual show in every season of the year, and because of its Mediterranean valley climate, daytime temperatures remain sunny and mild even in winter.
1. Peak Season: 'Crush' (Grape Harvest Season, Late August, September & October)
If you want to experience Napa Valley at peak energy, when tractors haul bins of ripe grapes down Highway 29 at dawn, the air around every cellar smells of sweet fermenting must, and wineries host Harvest Parties and Grape Stomps (like at Grgich Hills and V. Sattui), visit during September or October:
- The Weather: warm, cloudless 24°C to 29°C (75°F to 85°F) afternoons with crisp 10°C nights (because September and October are the two most popular months of the year, hotel rates are at their peak and you should book wineries 4 to 6 weeks ahead).
2. The Two Best Insider Seasons: 'November Autumn Foliage' & 'Feb/March Mustard Season'
- Late October & All of November (Peak Autumn Foliage & Lower Crowds): here is what surprises visitors from the East Coast: Napa Valley's autumn leaf colours peak in November, not October. Once harvest wraps up at the end of October, the leaves on millions of grapevines turn brilliant canary yellow, burnt orange and deep crimson across the entire valley floor through Thanksgiving, while hotel prices and tasting crowds drop by 30%.
- Late January, February & March ('Wild Mustard Season' & 'Cabernet Season', Best Value): while grapevines are dormant in late winter, nitrogen-fixing bright yellow wild mustard flowers carpet the vineyard floors from end to end. Sunny afternoons reach 16°C to 20°C (62°F to 68°F), hotel rates are 35% to 50% lower than October, Calistoga's hot springs feel soothing, and tasting hosts have time to pour off-menu library wines.
3. Late Spring & Summer (April to August, Budbreak & Long Sunny Days)
In April and May, bright emerald-green shoots emerge on the vines with ideal 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F) weather; in June, July and August, days are long and rain-free (27°C in southern Napa and Carneros, warming to 33°C up in Calistoga before cooling every evening when the Bay breeze rolls in).
