Best Time to Visit Niagara Falls: Boat Season (May to Nov), Autumn Vines & Frozen Winter Mist

Timing your trip for the May-to-November boat and boardwalk season, October wine harvest or January ice-castle formations.

While the Niagara River thunders over the cliff 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (and never stops flowing even at -20°C), several of Niagara's signature water-level attractions operate seasonally between late spring and late autumn. Here is how the four seasons compare.

1. Peak Boat, Fireworks & Garden Season (Mid-May to Early October)

  • Late Spring (May and June, Peak Water Volume & Blooming Gardens): by early May, the Lake Erie ice boom is removed and the Niagara City Cruises boats, White Water Walk and Whirlpool Aero Car are all open. In May and June, spring snowmelt from the Great Lakes puts river flow at its highest volume, temperatures sit at a pleasant 20°C to 25°C, and the nightly fireworks begin on the mid-May Victoria Day weekend.
  • High Summer (July and August, Warmest Weather for Getting Soaked): with sunny 27°C to 29°C afternoons, getting drenched in waterfall spray on the boat or at the Cave of the Winds Hurricane Deck feels refreshing rather than chilly, and Niagara's peach and cherry orchards are in full harvest (visit mid-week Tuesday to Thursday to beat weekend crowds).
  • Golden Autumn & Wine Harvest (September and October, Best Overall): in September and October, summer crowds drop by half while the boats, White Water Walk and fireworks (until mid-October) are still running. From early to late October, the maples and oaks lining the Niagara Gorge, Niagara Glen and Queenston Heights turn fiery red and orange while the vineyards of Niagara-on-the-Lake buzz with the grape harvest.

2. Winter Ice Wonderland & Icewine Season (Mid-November to March)

Although the boat tour and White Water Walk close for winter in November, Journey Behind the Falls, the 670m Power Station Tunnel, Skylon Tower and the Butterfly Conservatory stay open all winter. From mid-November to early January, the free Winter Festival of Lights illuminates the parkway; and in January and February, freezing waterfall mist coats every tree, lamppost and cliff wall around Table Rock in thick white ice sculptures, while wineries celebrate the January Niagara Icewine Festival.
