3 Days in Oslo: Architecture, Vigeland Park, Bygdøy and Fjord Saunas

Three smooth days combining the harbour promenade, Vigeland Park, Bygdøy's polar ships and Holmenkollen.

This three-day itinerary follows Oslo's geography from east to west along the fjord on Day 1, pairs the great western park and museum peninsula on Day 2, and heads up the river and into the forest hills on Day 3. Read our Ruter transport guide to decide whether a 24/48-hour Oslo Pass or standard Ruter tickets fit your pace.

Day 1: Bjørvika (Opera House & MUNCH), Akershus, National Museum & Aker Brygge

  • Morning: walk up the sloping white marble roof of the Oslo Opera House in the clear morning light, step inside Deichman Bjørvika Library, and spend two hours next door at MUNCH seeing The Scream and the monumental canvases.
  • Midday: warm up in a floating wood-fired sauna at Sukkerbiten or Langkaia with a refreshing dip in the Oslofjord, followed by street food lunch at SALT or Vippa.
  • Afternoon: stroll through the medieval ramparts of Akershus Fortress and down to Rådhusplassen to see the murals inside Oslo City Hall and the 1893 painted Scream inside the National Museum.
  • Evening: walk the sunny western boardwalk of Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen out to Renzo Piano's Astrup Fearnley Museum sculpture beach for sunset and a seafood dinner.

Day 2: Vigeland Sculpture Park, Bygdøy Polar Ships & Oslofjord Island Ferry

  • Morning: ride Tram 12 to Vigeland Sculpture Park before tour buses arrive; walk the 850-metre axis across the Bridge (The Angry Boy) up to the 14-metre granite Monolith, then coffee and a cardamom bun in leafy Frogner.
  • Midday: take Bus 30 (or the summer ferry from City Hall Pier 3) onto the Bygdøy Peninsula to see the 1200 AD wooden Gol Stave Church at Norsk Folkemuseum, then board the polar exploration schooner at the Fram Museum and see the balsa raft at the Kon-Tiki Museum.
  • Afternoon: back at City Hall Pier 4, use your regular Ruter Zone 1 ticket to hop electric Ferry B1 for a 7-minute crossing to car-free Hovedøya island (abbey ruins and shoreline paths) or Lindøya (pastel wooden cottages).

Day 3: Grünerløkka River Walk, Holmenkollen Ski Jump & Ekeberg Sunset

  • Morning: start in Grünerløkka with a light-roast filter coffee at Tim Wendelboe, walk past the waterfalls of the Akerselva River (stopping for a waffle with brunost at Hønse-Lovisas Hus) and have lunch at Mathallen Oslo food hall in Vulkan.
  • Midday: board T-bane Metro Line 1 for the scenic 25-minute climb up into the hills to Holmenkollen Ski Jump, then continue five stops to Frognerseteren for apple cake overlooking the fjord.
  • Evening: ride Tram 13 or 19 eight minutes up from Oslo S to Ekebergparken to walk the forest sculpture trail and watch sunset from Edvard Munch's Scream viewpoint.
