Best Time to Visit Oslo: Fjord Summers, 17 May and Snow Season

Timing your trip for 19-hour summer days on the fjord, 17 May bunad parades or winter skiing on Metro Line 1.

Because Oslo sits sheltered at the northern end of a 100-kilometre fjord surrounded by hills rather than exposed to the open North Atlantic, its climate is sunnier, warmer in summer and less rainy than Norway's west coast around Bergen. In late June the sun rises before dawn and sets late in the evening (with twilight lasting all night), whereas in late December daylight runs throughout the day. The prime window for warm outdoor living is May through September, while January to March is a genuine winter sports wonderland.

May and Norway's Constitution Day (17 May) is one of the most joyful times to be in Scandinavia. Snow melts from the city parks, fruit trees blossom in the Botanical Garden at Tøyen, and on 17 May (Grunnlovsdagen) the entire population dresses in traditional hand-embroidered regional wool costumes (bunader) as tens of thousands of school children march with brass bands up Karl Johans gate past the Royal Family waving from the Palace balcony.

High Summer (June, July and August) brings warm, bright days averaging 21°C to 23°C (frequently reaching 25°C to 28°C in July). The water temperature in the sheltered inner Oslofjord climbs to a swimmable 18°C to 21°C, turning Tjuvholmen, Sørenga and the island beaches of Hovedøya into lively bathing spots. In late June, Midsummer Eve (Sankthansaften, 23 June) brings bonfires and boat picnics, while early August hosts the four-day Øya Festival (Øyafestivalen) in Tøyenparken.

Autumn (September and October) offers crisp hiking weather along the Akerselva River and in Ekebergparken as birch and maple trees turn gold, alongside quieter galleries inside MUNCH and the National Museum.

Winter (December to March) sees temperatures between -6°C and 0°C. In December, the Spikersuppa Christmas market and skating rink glow on Karl Johans gate; from January to March, locals carry cross-country skis onto Metro Line 1 up to Frognerseteren to glide along 2,600 kilometres of groomed forest trails (including 90 km of floodlit night tracks) and warm up inside harbour saunas.
