Where to Stay in Rabat: Best Areas Compared
Choosing between restored courtyard riads in the Medina or Kasbah and leafy hotels on the tramway.
Where you stay in Rabat comes down to a choice between traditional Moroccan courtyard architecture inside the historic walls and French-era or modern hotel comfort along the tree-lined avenues of the Ville Nouvelle. Because the city is compact and crossed by the Rabat-Sale tramway, you are rarely more than fifteen minutes from any major sight.
The Medina and Rue des Consuls (best for courtyard riads and walkability)
Tucked along quiet side lanes off Rue des Consuls, Rue Souika and the southern edge of the Andalusian Wall, Rabat's restored riads (traditional townhouses built around an inward-looking tiled courtyard and roof terrace) offer carved stucco, cedar ceilings and homemade breakfasts of warm msemen pancakes and fresh orange juice. Unlike the deep alleys of Fez, most Rabat riads sit a short walk from a taxi drop-off gate such as Bab Oudaia, Bab Laalou or Bab Chellah, putting the Kasbah of the Udayas, river rowboats and Avenue Mohammed V within ten minutes on foot.
The Kasbah of the Udayas (unbeatable ocean and river atmosphere)
A tiny handful of guesthouses and private houses operate inside the 12th-century fortress walls of the Kasbah itself. Sleeping here means waking up to the sound of Atlantic surf and stepping straight onto blue-and-white cobbled alleys before day visitors arrive, though you will need to carry luggage up the stone entrance steps and walk down to the river boulevard for taxis or restaurants after dark.
Centre Ville and Quartier Hassan (most practical all-round base)
Stretching from Rabat Ville train station and the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern Art east toward Hassan Tower, Centre Ville and the adjoining Hassan residential quarter combine leafy streets, bakeries, brasseries and immediate access to Tramway Line 1. Choose this area if you want an elevator hotel, air-conditioned modern rooms and an easy walk to both the Medina gates and the railway station.
Agdal, Souissi and the Bou Regreg Marina (modern dining and resort comfort)
South-west around Rabat Agdal station (the stop for Al Boraq high-speed trains), the lively university and shopping district of Agdal is packed with contemporary cafes, international restaurants and mid-range business hotels on Tramway Line 1. Further south, diplomatic Souissi and Hay Riad host five-star garden resort hotels, while the modern Bou Regreg Marina on the Sale side offers waterfront apartments looking straight across to the Kasbah cliff.
