What to Wear in São Paulo

City clothes, layers and an umbrella, not beachwear.

São Paulo is a big-city place, not a beach resort, and locals dress accordingly: neat, urban and a little stylish. Shorts and flip-flops mark you out as a visitor more than in Rio. You'll fit in with jeans or light trousers, a T-shirt or shirt, and trainers.

For summer

December to March is the rainy season, so pack light, breathable clothes and a compact umbrella or light rain jacket for the afternoon storms, which can soak you in minutes. Shoes that cope with wet pavements help.

For winter

From June to August, the days are sunny and mild, but mornings and nights can be cold, and hotels and restaurants often lack heating. Bring a warm jumper or fleece and a light jacket, and layer up for evenings out.

For going out

Smart casual works for most restaurants, including the better ones. Upmarket bars and clubs in Itaim Bibi and Jardins expect a bit more effort, and Paulistanos dress up for a night out. In Vila Madalena's bars, anything goes.

For walking and safety

Comfortable shoes for long days on hard pavements and metro stairs. Leave flashy jewellery and watches at home, and carry a small bag you can keep in front of you on the metro.
