Driving the 230km Figure-8 Grand Loop Road: Beating Traffic, 'Bison Jams' & Offline Maps
Why a '45-minute' GPS drive in Yellowstone actually takes 90 minutes, and how to time the Lower and Upper Loops to beat traffic.
Unlike Yosemite or the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone has zero public shuttle buses, meaning everyone explores its 230-kilometre (142-mile) Figure-8 Grand Loop Road in their own vehicle. Because the maximum speed limit inside the park is 73 km/h (45 mph) on narrow two-lane roads, and a herd of 200 bison strolling down the centre line can stop traffic for 45 minutes, follow these five driving rules so you spend your day at the geysers instead of in a queue.
Five Golden Driving Rules for the Grand Loop Road
- Never Try to Drive the Entire Figure-8 in a Single Day: split the Figure-8 cleanly into two separate full days: dedicate Day 1 to the 154 km Lower Loop (Madison → Grand Prismatic → Old Faithful → West Thumb and Lake → Hayden Valley → Canyon), and Day 2 to the 112 km Upper Loop plus Lamar Valley (Norris → Mammoth Hot Springs → Tower-Roosevelt → Lamar Valley).
- Pass Through the West Entrance Gate in the Early Morning: in July and August during mid-morning rush hours, the vehicle queue at the West Entrance (West Yellowstone) can back up into town for 45 minutes. Drive through right after dawn so you sail straight through and find open spaces at Old Faithful, Norris or Lamar Valley.
- Time 'Grand Prismatic Spring' for Late Morning & 'Old Faithful' for Early Morning or Late Afternoon: the compact car park at Norris Geyser Basin and the Fairy Falls Lot (for the Grand Prismatic Overlook) fill quickly around midday. Visit Norris early, or explore Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin in the late afternoon after tour buses depart, when its 1,000-space car park is easy to enter.
- Download 'Offline Google Maps' and the 'NPS App' Before Entering: 85% of Yellowstone has zero mobile reception. In the official National Park Service App, toggle 'Download for Offline Use' on your hotel Wi-Fi for offline GPS maps and geyser descriptions, or use the GuideAlong Yellowstone App.
- Pull All 4 Tyres Completely Off the White Line to Watch Wildlife: rangers ticket vehicles stopped in the lane; always pull into a paved turnout.
